Saturday's College Football Free Pick: NC State at Virginia

If you do not remember what these two teams were last season, that is ok, because actually that is where the edge starts.

Virginia had a very successful year. Eleven wins looks strong in any context. But the deeper read matters more here, because a lot of those wins came in the kind of coin-flip spots that do not always hold up from one season to the next. Virginia won 3 overtime games, plus several other 1-possession games, and that is the part I do not want to ignore.

That kind of run can make a team look a little better than it really was. Not terrible. Not fake. Just a little inflated by the bounce of close endings. And now the setup changes. Virginia loses its QB, both top RBs, and key pieces on the o-line. That is a lot to replace when the opener is also the first conference matchup of the college football season.

Stability is the point

This is where NC State starts to make a lot of sense.

The Wolfpack enter with a returning QB and some new weapons, which is a far cleaner spot than asking Virginia to rebuild major parts of its offense right away. Early in the season, I want the side that can line up with a little more certainty at the most important spot on the field.

Virginia says it is returning 48,313 snaps from last season, and that number is real. Still, experience does not erase the fact that the offense has new starters at quarterback and tailback. That matters. Especially against an opponent that already showed it can handle this matchup.

NC State beat Virginia 35-31 last season, and Dave Doeren has never lost to Virginia. That alone does not make a bet, of course, but it does fit the larger picture. The Wolfpack have seen this opponent win close games before, and they still found a way to go in there and win outright last year.

There is also a little familiarity here behind the scenes. NC State’s staff has a connection to Virginia offensive coordinator Des Kitchings, who spent eight seasons on Doeren’s staff in Raleigh before going to UVA. That kind of overlap does not decide a game, but it does matter when you are trying to size up how much separation really exists.

Why the points matter

Virginia’s defense was strong last season, finishing second in the ACC in scoring defense at 19.6 points allowed per game. So no, I am not expecting an easy afternoon on either side. That actually makes the points more valuable, not less. If Virginia’s new offense takes a little time, this could turn into a tighter, lower-margin spot than the market wants to give credit for.

And that is really the heart of it. Virginia had the better record last year, but NC State feels more trustworthy in the places that matter most to an opener. Returning QB. More stability. A proven head coach edge in the series. A matchup where the favorite is asking a lot from a reworked offense.

I think the Wolfpack can win this one outright, but we do not need to force that angle. The safer read is the right read.
