Thursday Night College Football: Colorado at Georgia Tech

College football finally opens with a matchup that makes a lot of sense from a betting angle, because Colorado at Georgia Tech feels more about control than fireworks.

The number sits at 51.5, and I actually like the under more than any side in this spot. That comes down to how both teams are built right now, especially early in the season when timing is still coming together and coaches usually lean on what they trust most.

Colorado’s offseason talk has centered on a much stronger defense. That matters here. The staff has been upbeat about the linebackers, the edge rushers, and the depth in the secondary, and there is a new coordinator in Robert Livingston working to tighten things up. That does not mean the Buffaloes are suddenly perfect on that side of the ball, but it does mean they should be a lot more difficult to run on than people may be expecting.

On the other side, Colorado’s offense is still a variable. The offensive line is still being sorted out, and that matters a lot in a standalone opener. If you are not settled up front, drives tend to stall. Protection gets shaky, rhythm gets messy, and explosive plays are harder to create. That is exactly the kind of setup that helps an under.

Georgia Tech brings a pretty clear identity to this spot. They should be run heavy again, and that is important because running the ball keeps the clock moving. That also fits the reality of their offseason changes. They are replacing the offensive coordinator, quarterback, and running back, so even if the system stays grounded in the run game, there is still plenty of moving parts in the passing operation.

That uncertainty matters. If Tech wants to lean on the ground game, that can absolutely work, but it also usually means longer possessions and fewer total snaps. And if Colorado has actually improved on defense the way the offseason buzz suggests, that can slow things down even more.

Why the pace points under

This is where the matchup really starts to line up for a lower-scoring result. Both sides have reasons to run, and neither side looks eager to expose a shaky secondary early if it does not have to. The notes on both teams point in the same direction, because the secondary is not great on either side, but there is no strong reason to assume either offense will push all its chips into the passing game right away.

That is the key for me. If both teams are content to stay on schedule, run the football, and avoid unnecessary mistakes, the clock becomes a major factor. Drives can still move, but they move slowly. Field position matters more. Third downs matter more. Red-zone execution matters more.

Georgia Tech also has the benefit of a familiar run-game identity in this matchup. Their official preview noted they rushed for 320 yards in last year’s opener at Colorado, which reinforces exactly how they want to play. Even with a new offensive coordinator, the foundation still points toward the ground. That is not a bad thing for them, but it does help the under.

Colorado should be better defensively. Georgia Tech should be run heavy. Tech also has some real questions on offense after the changes at coordinator, quarterback, and running back. Put that together, and the path of least resistance is a slower, lower-scoring opener than the number suggests.

I do not need perfection to see it. I just need both teams to spend enough of the night running into contact, burning clock, and taking the safer route. That is enough for me.
