Why I am not touching the full game total

Actually, this is one of those spots where the cleanest angle is not the full number at all.

Last night we saw 66pts from Utah, 59pts from Minnesota, 73pts from UCF, and that is the kind of early-season scoring environment that can pull bettors toward an over without slowing down enough to ask the right question. In Oklahoma vs UTEP, the better question is simple, can UTEP hold up long enough to matter?

I do not need to guess on that part. I think UTEP could potentially get blanked, and once that becomes a real possibility, the full game total starts to lose value. If one side may spend most of the night stuck, then the safer angle is to isolate the team that should actually control every snap.

That side is Oklahoma.

OU should have whatever it wants

Oklahoma’s offense is set up to do damage here. The Sooners spent the offseason focused on improving an offense that averaged 354.3 yards per game last season, and that matters because this number is not asking for perfection, it is asking for volume plus efficiency in a spot where both should be available.

John Mateer is the centerpiece of that push. Oklahoma’s roster page shows he started all 12 games in 2025 and accounted for 2,885 passing yards, 14 passing TDs, and 8 rushing TDs despite missing one game with injury. That is the kind of profile that fits a home opener against a defense still sorting itself out.

And Oklahoma did not exactly enter this season with a bare cupboard. The Sooners return 19 letterwinners on offense, including eight players who started at least six games last season, and add 13 newcomers. That mix matters in a spot like Friday night in Norman. It tells me Oklahoma should have enough continuity to move quickly, and enough talent to keep pressure on all night.

This is also why I am not worried about the fact they never cleared this number last season. That part is real, and I do not want to ignore it. Still, the schedule was tougher, Mateer was hurt a lot, and the offense should be better this season. Those are valid reasons to expect a different result now than what we saw a year ago.

UTEP makes the setup even better

The other side of this matchup is a big part of the play too.

UTEP is opening the season on the road at Oklahoma, and this is their first contest of the season. That is not an ideal spot to walk into when the opponent has talent, depth, and a clear offensive edge. The Miners also bring a defense that has had a complete overhaul essentially, which usually means a rough start before anything else.

CBS Sports’ preview even notes that Oklahoma’s entire starting defense Friday is likely to be made up of players who began their collegiate careers at Oklahoma. That tells me the Sooners should not only be able to score, they may also be in position to keep the ball coming back fast enough to stack points.

UTEP’s own preview also points to some continuity and injury uncertainty, including Garrett Hawkins playing the first three games in 2025 before missing the rest of the season due to injury. I am not trying to make too much out of that single note, but it does fit the broader picture. This is a road opener against a team with more stability on offense and a lot more upside in the spot.

So, if I am building the play from the ground up, I do not want to rely on UTEP helping. I want the side most likely to score early, score often, and keep rolling.

Friday night in Norman should allow that.
