Saturday CFB Free Pick: Ball State at Ohio State

Listen, don't get used to taking these horrific huge dogs, but this one makes some sense.

Ohio State is going to score. That part is not really up for debate. The more important question is how long the Buckeyes stay in attack mode once this starts to bend in their direction. The schedule tells the story. Ohio State has Ball State first, then Texas on Sept. 12, and that is not a small detail. When a massive favorite has a monster trip waiting right behind an opener, the incentive to keep piling on is basically gone.

Actually, that is where this number starts to feel a little too big. The AP already has Ohio State favored by more than 50 points, so we are dealing with an enormous spread in a spot where the Buckeyes have no real reason to chase style points. There is no need to show too much. There is no need to risk injury. There is no need to leave starters out there if the result is already handled.

Pace matters here

Both teams are going to run the ball a lot. Especially Ball State. That matters more than people want to admit, because running the ball keeps the clock moving and cuts into the number of snaps. If the pace is slower than expected, the margin for a cover gets thinner in a hurry.

And that is really the heart of the play. Ohio State can dominate without turning this into a full-throttle track meet. If the Buckeyes are efficient early, a lot of the second half becomes about backups, substitutions, and simply getting out clean. That is exactly the kind of setup that can leave a huge number hanging around even while the favorite controls everything.

Ball State does not need to do a lot here. That is the other reason this makes sense. We may not even need much from the Cardinals at all. If Ohio State is content to salt away possessions and empty the bench, then one Ball State score could be enough to stay inside the number. That is not some wild, complicated handicap. It is actually pretty simple.

The spot is doing the work

Ball State is opening the season on the road, and Ohio State has a much bigger thing in the background with Texas coming up in Week 2. So why force the issue here? Why keep pressing if the next game is the one that really matters?

That is why I keep coming back to the same thought. Even if Ohio State gets rolling, the back end of this matchup should favor the dog. The Buckeyes can score at will, sure, but a huge spread in a spot like this does not need a perfect Ball State effort to fall short. It needs a little slowdown. It needs a little game-state drift. It needs Ohio State to do the practical thing and move on.

How about 49-3 final score? I'll take it.

So yes, this is one of those rare huge-dog looks that actually fits the spot. I am not asking Ball State to win the line of scrimmage. I am not asking for a perfect offensive day. I am only asking for enough pace control and enough late-game mercy to stay inside a massive number.
