Sunday Night College Football: Louisville at Ole Miss

This one finally dipped down below 7, so I’m jumping on it.

Louisville is the single most popular dog of week 1, and I get why. When a number gets attention like that, people naturally want to grab the points and hope the live dog shows up. That logic makes sense in a vacuum. It just does not clear the bar for me here.

I would need +8 or more to back Louisville in this spot.

Why the number matters

Once a line falls under a touchdown, the conversation changes. At that point, you are no longer asking if an underdog can hang around. You are asking if the market has already handed out too much credit to the dog before the season even starts.

That is where I land here.

Ole Miss is coming off a huge season, actually the first-ever College Football Playoff semifinal run and the first 13-win season in program history. That kind of run can leave a market tax, especially in the opener. People see the success, then immediately start searching for the letdown angle. I understand that. But I think the reaction is being stretched too far.

The Rebels are also sitting at No. 9 in the AP preseason poll, so this is not some team flying under the radar. The number already knows Ole Miss is respected. The question is whether it is respected enough to justify Louisville getting this many points against a team that should still control a lot of the matchup.

Ole Miss has the answers where it matters

What stands out to me is continuity at the spots that matter most.

Ole Miss returns preseason all-SEC quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy. That gives them stability in the backfield and at QB, which matters a lot in a game where the other side is bringing in a new transfer quarterback who is supposed to be a dual-threat. That can create some early uncertainty, sure, but I still trust the Ole Miss side more when the dust settles.

The Rebels also know how to stop the run really well. They return their best run stoppers from last season, and that matters here because if Louisville wants to make this number uncomfortable, it needs to find a way to stay ahead of schedule and avoid obvious passing situations. That is easier said than done against a defense that should be elite once again.

Actually, that defensive side is the part of this number I like the most. Ole Miss has the personnel to make Louisville earn everything, and if the Cardinals are relying on a new quarterback to create answers right away, I do not want to be holding the dog in that kind of spot.

The market may be overreacting to the hangover angle

The hangover or letdown from making the CFP semis last season is being priced in too much here.

That is the heart of it.

I am not saying there is no adjustment after a breakthrough season. Of course there is. But the betting market can overdo that narrative when it is still trying to price a team off its most recent ceiling instead of its actual current match-up edge. Ole Miss is not being asked to win by margin because of name value alone. It is being backed because the setup still points to the Rebels having the better structure, the better continuity at QB and RB, and the better answer against Louisville’s new-look offense.

And if you are waiting for me to jump in on Louisville at a lower number, I am not there. The move below 7 is what got me involved. Before that, I could pass. Here, I cannot.
