Monday Night College Football: SMU at Florida State

A spot I actually like early

College football hands us a clean angle here, and it is one of those spots I actually want to lean into before the market talks itself out of it.

SMU goes into Florida State on Monday night, and the first thing that stands out is not some fancy matchup chart. It is the calendar. Florida State already played in Week 0, while SMU is opening its season in Week 1. That matters more than people want to admit.

A team that has already taken the field has usually had its early rhythm test. The locker room has felt real speed, the coaching staff has a live sample, and the public tends to overrate that little bit of continuity. Then you pair that with a brand-new opponent still stepping into its opener, and the number can become a little soft.

That is where this feels mispriced to me. SMU should be north of a field goal favorite here, not sitting in a short road role.

The Week 1 angle keeps cashing

There is a system in play here that keeps pulling my attention back to SMU. When a Week 1 team faces a team that already played in Week 0, the Week 1 side has been strong at the window. For Power 4 teams, that profile is 45-26 ATS, which comes out to 63.4%.

That is not some tiny little split I am forcing. That is a real enough number to matter, and it fits this matchup cleanly.

Florida State already got its first game in. SMU has not. People often assume the team with a game under its belt has the advantage, but that is not always how this works. Sometimes that first game just gives the market a reason to overvalue a team that has already shown a little something. Meanwhile, the other side comes in fresher, with a more stable number, and that is usually where the value hides.

SMU has the steadier offensive setup

I also like the way SMU brings back Kevin Jennings for his third year as the Mustangs’ starting quarterback. That matters. You do not need a full deep dive to see why. A quarterback in that kind of spot gives the offense a steadier baseline, and SMU has a veteran offensive line in front of him.

That is the kind of setup I trust in a short road favorite role.

Florida State, meanwhile, comes into this with multiple key absences showing up on the initial ACC availability report. Devin Carter, Karson Hobbs, Chuck Kennon, and Jordan Crutchfield were listed out. Gavin Markey was doubtful, and Tae’Shaun Gelsey was questionable. When a team is already trying to build off its opener, that kind of report can make the margin thinner than the market wants to admit.

SMU has some names on its own report too, so this is not a clean injury-free spot for either side. But the line still points toward SMU, and the schedule setup still points toward SMU. That is the piece I care about most.

Why I am backing the Mustangs

This is one of those spots where the cleanest read is usually the right one. Florida State has already been through the first step of the season. SMU has not. The Mustangs bring back a quarterback with real continuity, and the market has them priced as if this is closer to a coin flip than a game where they should be laying a little more.

AP already framed this one as a featured Labor Day matchup, and I understand why. It has a national feel, a good number, and enough attention that people will want to make it more complicated than it needs to be.

I do not.

I like the setup, I like the system, and I like the fact that SMU should be a little more respected than this number suggests. Give me SMU -2.5 at -110 for 1.5 units.
