Saturday Night College Football: LSU at Ole Miss
This was one of the first spots I had circled, and honestly, I was pretty sure the line would open a bit higher.
That is really where the whole handicap starts. I project LSU -6, so seeing a cheaper number means the market is still giving Ole Miss plenty of credit off an undefeated start. I get why. Ole Miss is 2-0, and a 2-0 record always looks clean on paper. But Ole Miss is also 0-2 ATS, and that part matters to me. It tells me the market may be a little too high on what we have actually seen so far.
Why Ole Miss feels a little overpriced
The Louisville result is a big reason people want to buy into Ole Miss. A 41-38 walk-off win over No. 24 Louisville is going to pull attention, especially when it ends on a 48-yard field goal as time expires. That is a nice moment, no question.
Still, I come back to the score itself. Louisville hung 38 points, tied it late, and pushed Ole Miss all the way to the finish. So when I look at that result, I do not see a team that should be laying much respect in a spot like this. I see a team that escaped.
That matters here because LSU has already shown enough to justify the stronger side. LSU is also 2-0, with wins over Clemson and Louisiana Tech, so we are not asking the Tigers to prove anything from scratch. They have already done the work to earn a real look.
The return adds pressure, not value
Lane Kiffin going back to his old place adds a whole other layer here.
And yes, that matters. He is going to want this one badly. He is going to want it big. There is no reason to expect him to treat this as a quiet homecoming. If anything, it feels like the kind of spot where the emotions push the focus even higher.
That said, I do not want to overrate the storyline just because it is loud. Narratives are fun, but numbers still matter more. And the number here still feels short to me.
I projected LSU -6, so LSU -3 is enough of a gap to keep me interested. When I line it up that way, I am basically asking which side has the better price, and to me it is LSU.
A ranked matchup with LSU still holding the edge
There is also a little history here that fits the same angle. Ole Miss’s own preview noted this is the 13th meeting between these schools with both ranked, and LSU has the 8-5 edge in those ranked matchups.
I do not need that to make the bet, but it does support the general read. LSU has been the more trustworthy side in the bigger version of this rivalry, and this is exactly the kind of number where that matters.
The other piece is Ole Miss on defense. Giving up 38 to Louisville and needing a late escape is not the kind of performance that makes me want to step in front of LSU with a short spread. If Ole Miss is going to cash on reputation alone, the price has to be better than this.
Finally, when I put all of it together, I keep coming back to the same conclusion. Ole Miss is getting a little too much credit, LSU has the stronger number in my book, and the line is not asking much from the Tigers.
I like LSU -3 at -110 for 2 units.
