If you are looking for a clean buy-low spot, this is it.

Oregon has had a rough start to the season, no question. That is exactly why the price is still sitting in a range that feels playable. I actually like spots like this more than the public usually does, because the market can overreact when a strong program opens a little unevenly. The Ducks do not have to be perfect here. They just have to be better than USC in the areas that matter most.

Why USC looks vulnerable

USC is 4-0 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play, so on paper the record looks fine. The problem is how that record has been built.

This is a team that has played essentially nobody so far, and even with that softer path, the defense still has not looked good. Last week at Rutgers, USC barely escaped with a win. A 99-yard interception return TD changed the whole feel of that result, because without it, we are probably looking at a loss instead of a narrow escape.

That matters.

How different would we be talking about USC right now if that play does not happen? Much different. Maybe the record still looks clean, but the confidence level around the Trojans would be a lot lower.

And it is not only about one swing play. USC has allowed opponents to score on 10 of 13 red-zone trips through three games. That is not the kind of defensive profile I want in a matchup where Oregon should be able to create real pressure points.

Oregon should be able to lean into the matchup

This is where the Ducks start to look appealing.

Oregon’s offense appears to be rounding into form. Against Oregon State, the Ducks finished with a 273-2 edge in rushing yards after being outrushed in each of their first two games. That is the kind of step forward that matters in a spot like this, because it suggests the ground game may finally be stabilizing.

And if Oregon can run it at a decent level here, USC could be in trouble.

The Trojans have already shown cracks against the run, allowing an average of over 150 rush yards in their last 2 games against Rutgers and Louisiana. So what is Oregon going to do? That is the part I keep coming back to. This is not a matchup where USC gets to hide those issues.

I also do not love the way USC’s defense has handled pressure situations. The Rutgers result exposed how thin the margin can be when the opponent can keep attacking. Oregon does not need a track meet here. It can win this by controlling the line of scrimmage and forcing USC into a more difficult game script.

Oregon’s defense is the separator

You cannot pass on this Oregon defense.

That is really the core of the handicap. Oregon’s defense has been solid overall under new coordinator Chris Hampton, allowing 310.3 yards and 22.0 points per game entering this matchup. More than that, the Ducks have had real strength in the pass game historically, ranking No. 4 nationally in passing defense in 2025 at 157.9 yards allowed per game.

That gives Oregon a very workable path against a USC team that has leaned on the run through four games. King Miller leads the Trojans with 338 rushing yards and three TDs on 64 carries, so that matchup becomes important. If USC wants to stay balanced, Oregon has the front to make it hard. If USC leans too heavily on the pass, Oregon’s defense should be able to stand up to it.

I do worry a little about Oregon’s offensive line, because that is the one area where USC can still cause some stress. But USC has not generated much pressure on QBs, which helps offset that concern. Oregon does not need a flawless performance. It needs the better team in the better spot, and that is what this looks like.

Finally, this feels like a strong buy-low opportunity on the far superior team.
