Saturday College Football Preview: Michigan vs Minnesota
College Football free pick, and this is one of those spots where the number is telling you more about last Saturday than it is about what should happen here.
Michigan is sitting below a TD here because it lost outright to Iowa, while Minnesota is getting a nice bump off that outright win over Washington as a 10-point underdog. That is the exact kind of setup where you want to step back and ask if the market is reacting too hard to the last result instead of the matchup itself.
I think the answer is yes.
Why the line feels a little light
Michigan just had a game slip away at home against Iowa, and the frustrating part is that it was not a case of getting run off the field. The Wolverines had chances. They moved the ball. They were also cited for two red-zone turnovers and finished 2-for-4 in the red zone.
That matters a lot here.
When a team leaves points on the table like that, it changes how people remember the performance. A loss is a loss, of course, but the market tends to remember the final result more than the details. In a spot like this, that can create value on the bounce-back side if you believe the better finishing team shows up next.
That is where Michigan fits for me.
The Wolverines did enough in stretches against Iowa to suggest the offense can move the ball again here, and if they simply turn some of those red-zone chances into touchdowns instead of mistakes, the margin changes fast. That is the part I keep coming back to.
Minnesota’s last win was real, but so was the spot
Minnesota deserves credit for the Washington upset. A road win over No. 23 Washington is no small thing, and the Gophers earned it with production early, as Drake Lindsey threw three first-half touchdowns. The defense also showed up in a major way, finishing with seven sacks and two interceptions.
That is a strong performance, no question.
Still, I do not want to overreact to one big road upset and assume it automatically carries over here. Minnesota was also in a perfect sell-high spot after that result. When a team wins outright as a double-digit underdog, the market tends to elevate it quickly. That can be useful if the matchup supports it, but here I am more interested in the side that already had the tougher lesson last Saturday.
Michigan had the kind of loss that often creates focus, urgency, and a cleaner performance the next time out. Minnesota had the kind of win that can make a number look a little shorter than it should.
That is where the buy-low and sell-high angle comes in.
I expect Michigan to finish better
The key for me is not whether Michigan looked perfect against Iowa. It did not. The key is whether the Wolverines can take better advantage of their opportunities here, and I expect that answer to be yes.
That red-zone problem is the easiest thing to point to from last week, because it is also the easiest thing to clean up. If Michigan turns even one or two of those possessions into points instead of mistakes, then the pressure swings hard on Minnesota.
And if Minnesota is forced to chase the game instead of sitting on a comfortable rhythm, I like Michigan’s chances to separate.
I also do not mind leaning on the idea that the Wolverines are the more natural bounce-back side here. The Iowa result stings, especially because it came on the final play, but it also creates a better buy point than you normally get on a team with this level of response potential.
Minnesota is coming off a very good win. Michigan is coming off a painful loss with very specific mistakes attached to it. In a setup like that, I want the team that is cheaper because of recency, not the team that just got rewarded by it.
I expect a double digit victory in this bounce-back spot.
