Saturday’s Big Ten Clash: Ohio State at Iowa

Last week Iowa came through for us on that awesome Saturday, but now the funs over.

That was a great result, no question. I liked the Hawkeyes to keep pace with Michigan because the Wolverines cannot score, so laying a margin with them was never the right move. Iowa did cash for us, and I will give them full credit for that. Still, the way that win came together matters a lot here, because it came with help from spots that do not always show up twice.

Michigan still rushed for 153 yards and put up over 400 yards of total offense in that game. Iowa also got a special teams swing with a kick return touchdown. That was a huge part of why the upset held together. Actually, that is the exact kind of edge I want to separate from this matchup, because Ohio State is not walking into the same kind of setup.

Why this number is different

Iowa is coming off a last-second road win at Michigan, and now AP has them up to No. 14, their highest ranking since 2021. That is a big moment for the program, no doubt. But rankings do not change matchups, and this one is a brutal spot for the undefeated Hawkeyes.

Ohio State is No. 7 in the AP poll, and the Buckeyes come in with a simple mission. They need a convincing win. They already have a bad loss to Texas, so there is no room to mess around in a spot like this. AP also reported Ohio State was 1-3 in its last four games earlier this season, with each loss coming to a top-10 team. That tells me plenty about the level of urgency here. This is not a spot where they can sleepwalk through four quarters and still feel good about themselves.

The other piece is the one that matters most to me. If Ohio State can run the ball, which they will, this will not be close. That is the separator. Iowa just used defense and special teams to survive a game at Michigan, and that formula can absolutely work in the right spot. But if the opponent can control the line of scrimmage and force Iowa into a more honest style of football, the margin starts to tilt very fast.

Now the Hawkeyes have to do it again, only this time against a team that has every reason to push the pace and keep its foot on the gas. That special teams edge from last Saturday does not feel repeatable in the same way, and without that kind of swing, Iowa is left needing a cleaner matchup than this one gives them.

Ohio State also gets the benefit of walking into Kinnick with the kind of roster that can answer what Iowa does best. The Buckeyes are in a spot where a strong showing actually means something beyond the box score. This is the last game before Big Ten competition intensifies, and a statement win here would fit exactly what they need.

I get why some people will look at Iowa’s latest win and want to respect the momentum. I do too, to a point. But once you strip away the kick return, the defensive leverage, and the emotional boost from beating Michigan, what remains is a tougher ask against a far better team on paper.

Finally, this is the spot where I want to trust the more complete side and lay the number.

I’m laying Ohio State -14 at -110 for 2 units.
