Free College Football Pick: Notre Dame at BYU

I keep seeing the same kind of setup here, and it actually feels pretty familiar.

BYU is going to walk into this one with an undefeated record, the home crowd, and enough recent results to make people believe they can hang around. That is exactly how a lot of folks get pulled in. But this matchup reminds me so much of what happened in those BYU and Texas Tech spots last year. Big underdog. Hot team. Plenty of belief. Then the same ending, both times.

That’s the part that matters.

Notre Dame is not walking into Provo as some ordinary ranked team that can be bullied into a tight game. This is a different level of opponent, especially on the defensive side. The Irish are sitting first nationally in total defense through games of Oct. 10, allowing 214.2 yards per game. That is not a small edge. That is the kind of number that changes the whole feel of a matchup before kickoff even arrives.

And if you are trying to build a case for BYU, the offense has to show more than it has lately.

The Cougars just beat Iowa State, but the offense was not exactly lighting things up. They also went to TCU and won 17-10 while totaling just 216 yards of offense. Bear Bachmeier threw for only 66 yards in that game, and BYU still had to lean on 141 rushing yards plus two Bachmeier rushing TDs to survive. Even in a win, that is not the profile I want when Notre Dame is on the other side.

Why Notre Dame can pull away

The Irish defense is built to punish exactly this kind of offense. They turn you over. They intercept you. They do it all. When a team already has to fight for every yard, that sort of pressure can break the whole script fast.

That’s why I keep coming back to blowout potential here.

BYU did show toughness in that TCU game, and credit to them for getting out with a win. They also produced four sacks and an interception in that one, so there is no question they can make plays on defense. But Notre Dame is a far better offense than Texas Tech was in those matchups I mentioned, and that matters a lot. If BYU was able to survive those other spots by catching teams at the right time, this one feels much less forgiving.

Notre Dame can actually separate.

That is the difference.

The line movement tells part of the story too. It is already moving beyond 10, and that usually lines up with the market seeing what the matchup really is. I like being on the side that got there early, because once the number starts climbing, the value starts disappearing. We got in front of it, and that matters.

Freeman in ranked matchups

There is also the coaching angle, and I think it fits here cleanly. Marcus Freeman is 12-5 ATS vs ranked opponents. That is not some tiny trend to ignore. It backs up the idea that Notre Dame tends to show up ready when the opponent carries real market respect.

That’s exactly what BYU is bringing in here, an undefeated record and enough buzz to keep people interested. But buzz does not move the ball against elite defense. And it does not fix the fact that the Cougars have already shown some offensive limitations in this stretch.

I also keep thinking about the setting. BYU’s schedule notes make it clear this is the first Notre Dame visit to Provo since 2004, and the home crowd will absolutely make this feel bigger. That part is real. But bigger atmosphere does not erase the gap in quality. If anything, it can make the early price on Notre Dame even better if you are willing to trust the better side of the matchup.

This feels like a game where Notre Dame controls the line of scrimmage, forces mistakes, and slowly stretches it beyond reach. BYU may be undefeated, but I do not see a path where they keep this within striking distance for four quarters.
