Thursday NFL Preseason Preview: Chargers at Texans

This is my first NFL preseason pick, and I actually like the way Los Angeles fits this spot.

Preseason football is not about treating every snap the same way. Some coaches use it to survive the month. Jim Harbaugh has never really coached that way. He has always been a big believer in setting the tone, and that matters more than people want to admit in August. The market can call it a warmup, but if a coach is building habits from the start, that changes how I look at the board.

That is part of why I am interested in Chargers @ Texans on Thursday, August 13, at 8:00 PM ET. The number is small, which is exactly where Harbaugh has shown he can still create an edge. He is 5-2 ATS in preseason games with a line less than a FG, and he is 3-0 as a dog in them. That is not the kind of profile I want to ignore when I can actually get a point and a half.

Different goals, different pressure

The other piece here is simple. These two teams are not walking into August with the same checklist.

Los Angeles is in a brutal division, so even in preseason, the mindset has to lean toward being more buttoned up. That usually shows up in cleaner execution, better attention to detail, and a little more urgency around the basics. I do think that matters when you are laying out the first game plan of the preseason.

Houston has a different set of fixes to work through. The Texans need to sharpen the little things that hurt them last season, especially up front. The offensive line and run game remain a focus, and avoiding turnovers is part of that same conversation. Their own offseason messaging has backed that up, with attention on offensive-line communication and getting the line play in a better place.

That is not a bad thing, it is actually a sign of where the work still needs to happen. Houston knows the direction it needs to head. The issue is that preseason football is often about timing, cohesion, and getting reps to stick. That is a tougher ask when the details are still being worked out.

Why I make LA the favorite

I also think the market can be a little too quick to hand the home team the edge in spots like this. The Texans are still dealing with the same line concerns that have been part of the conversation, and the context from last season supports it. Their offensive line allowed 31 sacks in 2025, which was their fewest since 2014, but the team also described that line as decimated by injuries. That tells me the issue was never fully settled.

Add in the negative turnover ratio from last season, and the clean-up job becomes even more obvious. In preseason, those kinds of themes matter because they tend to show up early. The team that is a little sharper in structure, a little cleaner in decision-making, and a little more deliberate in approach usually has the better side of these numbers.

That is why I actually make Los Angeles the favorite here, even if the board is hanging the points the other way.

I will take the team that has the clearer preseason edge, the coach who leans into this month, and the side that makes more sense in a small number.
