Saturday NFL Free Pick: Vikings at Giants

Preseason football is not about name value, it is about the setup. That is the edge here, and it is why I actually like the Giants catching points at home.

Saturday, Aug. 15, at 1:00 p.m. ET, Minnesota visits MetLife Stadium in the opening preseason Week 1 spot for both clubs. The Vikings have had the better of this series in a lot of ways, and Minnesota even holds a 4-2 edge in preseason meetings. So nobody is asking for a gift here. The point is simpler than that, the price matters, and the Giants are the side giving us one.

Why the coaching angle matters

John Harbaugh is in his first preseason run as the Giants’ 21st head coach, and his comments in June tell you where his mind is. The offseason has been about getting the team better and building toward training camp, then shifting into camp mode after minicamp. He also made it clear that one of the biggest coaching challenges in these sessions is keeping players within the framework of what the staff wants, since these are not live-contact practices.

That matters in August.

Preseason is where structure, reps, and comfort can matter more than final score. A staff that is focused on building, not forcing, can keep a home team inside a number even if the talent gap feels real on paper. That is the kind of spot I want when I am laying out a first look at the board.

And Harbaugh has been strong in this role as an underdog during preseason, going 19-8 ATS (70%). That is not a random number to me. That is the profile of a coach who tends to keep his team competitive when the market expects them to come up short. In August, that counts.

Why the points make sense

The other part of this is simple. If you are taking a home dog in preseason Week 1, you want room for weirdness. You want the chance that a couple drives swing the result. You want the side that can hang around while both teams are still sorting out the opening script.

That is what 2.5 points gives you.

I also do not mind taking a step toward the Giants here because I think they have potential to make some noise this year. That does not mean I am forcing a long-term read into a preseason number. It means I am willing to back a team whose coach is already talking about building the right way, especially when the points are sitting on the home side.

Yes, Minnesota has had success against New York in the regular season, and yes, the Vikings have the better history in the preseason series too. But preseason is its own market, and the opener is where I want to trust the dog when the setup points that way.
