Thursday NFL Preview: 49ers vs Chargers

If you’re reading this before Thursday night, then you’re in the right spot. I already hit on the Chargers once, and I’m sticking with them here.

This is preseason, so I’m not looking for a perfect team or a perfect script. I’m looking for the side that has a reason to care, a coach who treats these reps like they matter, and enough of a cushion to survive the weird stuff that can happen in August. Actually, that is where Jim Harbaugh stands out.

Harbaugh has a real angle here

Harbaugh coached the 49ers before, so this matchup carries a little more bite than a normal preseason tune-up. He knows the other sideline, and that always matters a bit in a spot like this. More importantly, he has shown in preseason that he’s willing to take these games seriously.

The note here is simple, and I’m with it. Harbaugh is 4-0 ATS as a small dog in the preseason. That is not a random trend I want to fight, especially when the number is short and the setup is familiar.

This one is at SoFi Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 20, in preseason Week 2. The Chargers already have one preseason trip behind them and still have one more home tune-up after this before the regular season gets rolling. So this is not some throwaway matchup buried in a long list of exhibitions. It is a real checkpoint in their preseason slate, and I expect Harbaugh to approach it that way.

There is also a regular season meeting between these teams coming in Week 15, which adds another layer to the spot. These clubs will see each other again, and that only makes this one feel a little more pointed.

Why the points matter

I also like the number. Chargers +1.5 is important in preseason because two-point tries are much more common. That can change the shape of a final score in a hurry, and I want the extra half-point in a game where odd endings show up more often than they do in the regular season.

That is really the key here. In August, I do not want to lay points in a game that can turn on a late conversion, a depth-chart drive, or one possession going sideways. Getting the hook gives you a little breathing room, and in preseason that matters more than people want to admit.

There is also the 49ers side of the equation. Their camp has already been dealing with injuries, and that is never ideal when you’re trying to sort out preseason reps. I’m not using that to make some big sweeping claim about their outlook. I’m just saying it nudges me a little more toward the home dog in a game where depth and timing matter.

The other thing I keep coming back to is the matchup history. The Chargers’ materials point out that the 49ers hold a 26-20 preseason series lead, so yes, San Francisco has had the better of this matchup over time. I respect that. But I’m not betting history by itself, and I’m definitely not ignoring the coach who has every reason to care here.

Harbaugh has a way of making these spots feel a little more alive than the average preseason game. He’s not going to treat it as a walkthrough, and that makes all the difference when you’re looking at a short number.

So, finally, I’m taking Chargers +1.5 at -110 for 1 unit.
