Sunday NFL Preview: Bengals vs Texans

This is one of those spots where the number matters more than the record.

Cincinnati comes in at 1-0 after the 33-27 win over Tampa Bay, Houston comes in at 0-1 after the 36-31 loss to Buffalo, and a lot of people are going to stop right there and call it a Bengals look. I would not. Actually, when you take the opening number, the key number, and the injury report all together, Houston starts to make a lot more sense.

I've got this game lined at HOU -4, so I have to take this across the key number of 3 since I trust my ratings. That is really the heart of it here. If you are only looking at who won in Week 1, you are missing the part that matters most in betting, which is where the line should actually live.

Why Houston makes more sense here

Below 3 here HOU is the far superior defense and I think they'll be much better on offense.

That is the cleanest read in the game. Cincinnati can absolutely still be dangerous with Joe Burrow, and Burrow has a good ATS record as a dog, but it is usually when the Bengals are undervalued and getting +6 or more. This is not that kind of setup. This number is not asking you to lay a huge price against Cincinnati. It is asking you to decide whether the Texans should be favored by more than a field goal at home, and I actually think they should.

The home field piece matters too. Houston is not being asked to do anything extreme here. Just a standard home favorite role against a team that already had to fight through a Week 1 win, and now has to do it again with a few more questions on the board.

And those questions are real.

Burrow is listed questionable, although he was a full participant on Friday, so I am not turning this into a panic play on Cincinnati health. Still, when you combine that with Houston having Nico Collins ruled out, plus Jadeveon Clowney out and Ed Ingram out, there is enough moving around to make the matchup a little cleaner for the Texans than the early record might suggest. Cincinnati also has B.J. Hill questionable and Samaje Perine questionable, while Shemar Stewart was full go. CBS Sports noted Stewart was set for his season debut, which gives Cincinnati a defensive piece back, but I still do not see enough here to move me off Houston.

The Week 1 angle is lining up

Finally, the ZIGZAG THEORY fits. Teams that lose and fail to cover in week 1 vs a team that won and covered have gone 58-36-1 ATS (62%) Last 10 Seasons.

That is a pretty strong setup, and it lines up neatly with this matchup. Houston is the team coming off the loss and the non-cover. Cincinnati is the team coming off the win and the cover. You do not need to force a trend into every game, but when the numbers, the market, and the situation all point the same way, it deserves attention.

I also keep coming back to the idea that this is not a spot where the Bengals are being disrespected. Burrow always pulls some respect in the market, and that is fair. But respect is one thing, and price is another. If my number is HOU -4, then a home number of -2.5 is the side I want. It is simple enough. I am not trying to make this more complicated than it needs to be.

Houston should be better here, Houston should have the stronger defensive edge, and Houston is the team I trust to turn a small home number into a cover.
