Monday Night Football Preview: Giants at Rams

I cannot believe we are seeing flat 7s in this game.

Actually, I can believe the number moved. I just do not believe it moved far enough.

This is exactly the kind of Week 2 spot that trips people up. The market sees one team win, another team lose, and suddenly the price starts sliding like every result matters more than it really does in September. That is how you end up with a number that feels a little too cute for the most obvious side.

The preseason line here was -10. Right before Week 1 Sunday, after the Rams lost, the lookahead was -9.5. Then the Giants won, the number kept falling, and now we are sitting at flat 7 in a prime-time home spot. That is a huge move for a matchup that, in my view, did not change nearly that much.

Week 2 Overreaction Spot

This is a classic NFL Week 2 overreaction game.

One team tried to pull off a wacky travel plan and failed against a divisional opponent that always gives them trouble. The other team beat a mediocre divisional opponent at home under a new coach. I certainly think the Giants are improved, and I do not want to dismiss that win, because it was a good result and it matters.

But this is a big step up.

The Rams are back home in Los Angeles on a short turnaround into a prime-time game, and the pressure is real. Nobody wants to start 0-2, especially when the offense has already shown how ugly it can look. NFL.com has them at 7 points per game, ranked 32nd after Week 1, and that is exactly the kind of number that gets attention for the wrong reasons.

That does not mean the response has to be an overcorrection in the other direction.

The Giants are getting credit for the win, and they should. Still, I do not love handing out too much confidence after one strong result, especially when the other side now gets a home setting, a loud Monday night environment, and a chance to clean up what went wrong.

Why I Make The Rams Clearer

My line on this game is -9, so I am already seeing a solid discount sitting on a key number.

That is the entire case.

If you are laying 7 here, you are not asking the Rams to be perfect. You are asking them to do what a better team should do in a spot where the market may have gotten too wrapped up in one Week 1 result from each side. The Rams have a ton to correct, yes, but that also means there is room for a proper bounce if the offense simply performs to a more normal level.

And the injury picture does not make me run away from the Rams side either. There are names in question, sure, but that is true on both sides of the board. I am not making this play off a clean injury edge. I am making it because the number has fallen into a range that feels too generous for the home team.

Finally, the zigzag theory is in play here too. Teams that lose and fail to cover in Week 1 versus a team that won and covered have gone 58-36-1 ATS over the last 10 seasons. That is not a throwaway trend. It is another piece of evidence that the market often goes too far chasing the first result.

So when I line this up, I keep coming back to the same read. The Rams are the better buy at this price. The market has handed us a discount on a key number, and I want to take it before this climbs back where it probably should have stayed.

I am on Rams -7 at -112, 1.5 units.
