Sunday NFL Pick: Bengals at Steelers
If you've watched NFL football long enough, you know exactly how these AFC North spots usually go. They are rarely clean. They are usually a grind. The home dog hangs around, the price matters, and the number can be a little too generous if you are laying points in a rivalry like this.
That is actually where I want to be here.
Why Cincinnati is a tough trust on the road
The Bengals are 2-0, so I am not trying to sell some fake panic. They have won the first two. That part is real.
Still, the way those wins came together matters a lot more than the record right now. In Week 1, Cincinnati was gifted a few scoring possessions thanks to 4 turnovers by Tampa. In Week 2, the offense did almost nothing aside from a late explosive sequence, highlighted by a 32-yard TD to Ja'Marr Chase. On a down-to-down basis, the offensive metrics have been mediocre so far, and that is the part I care about in a spot like this.
The road trip to Pittsburgh is a different kind of test. This is a hostile environment, it is an AFC North game, and it is exactly the sort of setting where I want to fade an offense that has leaned too hard on a few splash plays. Even with the Bengals defense looking improved, I still do not love asking that offense to separate from a division opponent in this price range.
It is also not a clean injury situation on Cincinnati's side. Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins both show up on the Week 3 report. I am not trying to overstate that, but it adds to the idea that this offense may not be at its sharpest entering a tough road spot.
Why Pittsburgh fits the spot
Pittsburgh does not need to be spectacular here. It just needs to do enough at home, and the defense has the kind of profile I want in these spots. That is especially true in an AFC North matchup where the margins usually stay tight.
T.J. Watt already has 3.5 sacks this season and a pick-six, while Cam Heyward continues to be a problem in the middle. That matters. Pittsburgh may not be a great offense, but the defense performs and shows up at home when the matchup calls for it. In a game like this, that is enough to keep the home side inside the number.
The broader angle also lines up. Any AFC North game with a home dog of 3.5 or more has seen the dog go 25-8 ATS, 76%, over the last 5 years. That is not a fluke trend. It fits the usual shape of these games, ugly, physical, and decided by a few key possessions instead of a clean blowout.
Pittsburgh’s first AFC matchup of the young season also adds a little more edge to the setup. Rivalry games usually bring out the best version of the home underdog, and finally, that is the side I want here. I think the number is just a little too high for a Bengals offense that has not shown enough consistency to justify laying points on the road.
