Free NFL Pick: Chargers at Bills

Right before the season started, this was a 3point spread.

Now look at it.

Buffalo is 2-0, the Chargers are 0-2, and the market has pushed this all the way to a full touchdown. That is exactly the kind of number I want to fade, because not every 2-0 start means the favorite has suddenly become untouchable, and not every 0-2 start means the dog is dead.

Actually, when you dig into the first two weeks, this line looks even bigger than it should. The Bills have won both of their games, including the 41-31 win over Detroit, but their defense has been gashed. Through two games, Buffalo has allowed 601 passing yards and 76 completions. That is not the profile of a team that should be laying -7 with confidence.

That matters here because the Chargers, for all of their ugliness so far, may be walking into a better matchup than the market wants to admit. Yes, they have looked abysmal. Yes, the offense has been in rough shape, and the defense has given up too much. But if you are trying to make a case for a bounce-back spot, this is actually a decent one.

The reason is simple. Buffalo’s defense has not been stopping people.

And that is the part that gets overlooked when a team opens 2-0. The Bills have been getting enough offense to win, with Josh Allen throwing for 248 yards and 3 touchdowns in Week 2 against Detroit, but the back end has not looked clean. The coverage issues are real, and NFL coverage after Week 2 noted the defense is dealing with injuries heading into Week 3. That does not make Buffalo bad, but it does make a full touchdown feel heavy.

Why the road spot helps

The Chargers also get something valuable here, getting away from home. That can matter in spots like this where a team needs to reset more than it needs to be perfect. This is basically their season on the line. That changes the approach.

A team in that spot is often far more dangerous than its record suggests, especially when the number is this inflated. I really think the Chargers can bring their best effort here, because they do not have much choice. A road trip can simplify things, clear the noise, and force a more direct response.

And I do not want to ignore the bigger trend either.

Winless road teams in the first 6 weeks of the season have gone 65-38-3 ATS, good for 63%. That is a strong angle in its own right, and it fits this matchup. Early in the year, these road dogs are often more live than people want to believe, especially when the number gets pushed past a field goal and into touchdown territory.

Herbert as a dog

There is also a very specific angle here that fits the spread.

Herbert has not fared well as a favorite, but as a dog of more than a FG he is 13-2 ATS, 86%.

That is not something I want to fight against when I am already seeing an overreaction line. If you are giving me a capable coach and QB plus seven points, I am willing to take the side that has the room for a backdoor, a tighter game, and a much better chance to keep this inside the number than the market is suggesting.

Buffalo’s homefield is good, and I am not pretending otherwise. Still, the way this line has moved tells me the price is now asking too much from the favorite. The Bills have been winning, but they have not been shutting teams down. The Chargers have been losing, but the number is now built as if nothing can go right for them.

I do not buy that. Finally, I am laying it out plain.

The play is Chargers +7 at -110 for 1 unit.
