Sunday Night Football Preview: Rams at Broncos
This is a spot where I want the first half, not the full 60 minutes.
I have real concerns about the Rams here if we’re talking about four quarters in Denver. Actually, that is the entire point of the play. The matchup sets up better early than late, and in a place like Mile High, that distinction matters more than people sometimes want to admit.
What stood out last week was what we saw from Jacksonville. Denver did its job at home, stayed in the fight, and then finished late. That is not a small detail. It fits a pattern we have seen from the Broncos in plenty of home spots, where they pace themselves, stay within striking distance, and then push when the other side starts to wear down. In Denver, that late surge is not random. It is part of the environment.
Why the first half matters
The altitude is the first thing I circle. Opposing teams feel it, and early in the season it can hit even harder because bodies are still rounding into shape. That is a big reason I do not want to trust the Rams to hold up cleanly for four quarters here.
The Rams can absolutely start fast. We have seen that before. Last season, they jumped on teams early against PHI, and twice against SEA. That part of their profile makes sense in this spot. They can come out with tempo, make some early plays, and put pressure on Denver before the home side settles in.
But the other side of that coin is where the problem lives. The Rams have also shown a tendency to let opponents back in late. So if I am trying to find the cleanest angle, I do not want the full-game side. I want the window where the Rams are most likely to do their best work before fatigue turns the script.
That is why I am isolating the first half.
Denver’s home edge is real early in the season
There is also a bigger historical angle here that matters. Since 2000, the Broncos are 41-15 SU at home in the first month of the season. That is not something I can ignore when the setup is already pointing toward early Denver energy and late-game pressure.
This is also a prime-time home spot in Week 3, which only adds to the feel of Denver having the edge in front of its own crowd. The Broncos already showed in their 20-13 win over Jacksonville that they can hang around, stay patient, and finish the job once the other side starts to lose a little burst.
And if you are looking at the Rams side, the quarterback age factor matters in a setting like this. I am not trying to turn that into a bigger storyline than it is, but in a game where fatigue may decide things late, that is not the profile I want to lean on for a full four quarters.
The Broncos also have had success in this matchup historically, with Denver holding a 10-5 regular-season edge over the Rams. I do not need to force that point, but it does fit the broader read. This is not some unfamiliar opponent Denver has never handled before.
The best read
The market may want to price this as a full-game battle, and maybe it ends up that way on the scoreboard. I am not trying to outguess all 60 minutes when the setup is clearer in the opening half.
Early Denver altitude, early-season conditioning, a Rams team that can jump fast but sometimes fades late, and a home side that has already shown it can push when the other team wears down, that is enough for me.
