Sunday Night NFL Preview: Lions at Panthers
If you look at Lions at Panthers on Sunday night, the first thing that jumps out is the spot. We should see a lot of points here, and that usually pushes people toward the flashy angle, or toward trying to be too clever with a total.
I am not interested in making it complicated.
Detroit can actually stress Carolina where it matters
The main reason I like Detroit here is simple. Carolina’s defense has not given much reason to trust it, especially up front. If a defense cannot create pressure, that is a major problem against Jared Goff. If the pocket is clean, Detroit can keep the offense on schedule, and if the run game gets rolling, things can pile up in a hurry.
That is where this matchup starts to separate.
Detroit just put up great numbers against the Jets, and Goff handled pressure well in that spot too. The Jets blitzed him on 44.4% of his dropbacks, and he completed all 14 attempts against extra rushers for 148 yards and a TD. That matters here because Carolina has to prove it can force discomfort. The notes point to the exact issue, Carolina cannot generate much pressure, and that leaves a lot of room for Detroit to work.
NFL Pro even called Jahmyr Gibbs a nightmare matchup for the Panthers D, and that lines up with the bigger picture here. If the Lions can run efficiently and stay ahead of the chains, Carolina is going to have a hard time making this a one-score battle for long stretches.
Why I do not want to force a bigger number
Now, there is a catch, and it is an important one.
Detroit’s defense is still the side of the ball that keeps this from being a full-blown lay-it-and-forget-it type of play. The Week 3 recap said it plainly, when the line gets blocked up, it is almost assuredly a big play for the opponent. That is the part that keeps me from getting greedy.
I would not trust Detroit to cover a full touchdown or a double digit spread here. That is where the value starts to disappear. The Lions can score, sure, but their defense makes it harder to separate the way top-end favorite teams usually do. So the right answer is not to chase a bigger number just because Carolina is in a rough matchup.
The right answer is to stay with the short price.
Prime time matters too
There is also the spot itself. Carolina does not often play in primetime, and I love fading weaker teams in unfamiliar roles. That is not some dramatic angle, it is just a real factor that shows up enough to matter.
Home under the lights can help some teams. For others, it exposes the difference between being competitive in ordinary spots and handling a stage where every mistake gets noticed. Carolina is 1-2, Detroit is 2-1, and the setup fits the Lions more naturally. Detroit has the cleaner offensive path, and Carolina has the tougher job of proving it can hold up for four quarters.
So if you are looking at this number and wondering whether it is too short, I actually think the market still has room to move. This is a short price, and it will continue to rise in my opinion. That makes the current number more playable now than later.
The play here is 277 - 8PM ET LIONS -3 (spread) at -112, 1.5 units.
