Thursday Night Football Preview: Buccaneers at Cowboys
What if I told you the cleanest angle in Buccaneers at Cowboys is actually Tampa Bay's points?
That is where I keep landing. Dallas has the bigger name, the better public feel after a dramatic road win, and the kind of offense that can force a fast pace. But the more I look at the setup, the more this feels like a spot where Tampa Bay can still do enough damage to cash a modest number.
Dallas brings pressure, but also a target
Dallas comes home after the 34-30 win at Houston, and there is no denying the energy around a team that has already played in a pile of high-scoring games. Through four weeks, the Cowboys have scored and allowed 28+ points per game, which is actually a wild place to live. NFL history tells us that is not normal, and it keeps pointing toward a contest where both sides can move the ball.
That matters here because the Dallas defense has not been airtight. NFL.com had its dropback success rate allowed at 60.6%, worst in the league through Week 4. That is the kind of number that should catch your eye when a team total sits at 18.5.
I do not need Tampa Bay to be efficient every single drive. I just need enough clean possessions, enough time to settle, and enough finish once the Bucs get near the goal line. Against a defense giving up that much through the air, 18.5 is not asking much.
Daniels does not need a masterpiece
Jalon Daniels made his NFL debut last week, and actually, the numbers were not a total disaster. Against a depleted Green Bay defense, he posted positive passing and scrambling EPA numbers. The problem was the stuff that kills drives and flips momentum, namely 2 picks and 3 sacks.
That is the part I am willing to forgive a little here.
His first real game in the role came with mistakes, sure, but it also showed enough movement ability and enough functional production to suggest the floor is not as low as the box score looked. Tampa Bay also got a season-high 141 yards on the ground last week, which tells me there is at least some balance available if the offense can avoid early negative plays.
And that is where the setup starts to make sense. Dallas is coming off a letdown candidate of its own, now back home after a road trip and a big emotional win. This is exactly the kind of spot where the favorite can grab control early, which usually means the other side has to chase. If Tampa Bay is chasing, Daniels is going to throw. If Daniels is throwing, the chances to score are there.
Indoors, pass protection, and a manageable number
The Buccaneers also have something that matters in this spot, an offensive line that is a very good pass protection unit. That helps Daniels hold up long enough to work through reads and settle into the rhythm of the night. Indoors helps too. No weather noise, no extra variables, just a pretty straightforward setup for an offense that should have chances to stay functional.
I am not asking for some explosive outlier. Two touchdowns and two field goals sounds very plausible to me here, and that is really all this number needs. If Dallas does what the market expects and keeps the pressure on, Tampa Bay can still keep stacking enough drives to clear the bar.
FanDuel has 18.5 at -120, and I actually like that price. Finally, Buccaneers team total over 18.5.
