Broncos vs Chargers Free NFL Pick, Sunday Preview
Here we go again. I am seeing a setup that feels a lot closer than the market price.
I said it with Tampa Bay earlier in the season, and I am in a similar place here. Los Angeles does not need a perfect setup to stay inside a number like this. It just needs a reasonable path, and finally, the path is there.
Why I am leaning to Los Angeles
Denver is still getting a lot of attention because of the defense name, and I understand why. That side of the ball can grab headlines. It can also make people ignore what has actually happened so far.
The Broncos are 2-2, but the offensive profile is not especially convincing. NFL.com has Denver at 18.5 points per game, which ranks 27th in the league entering this matchup. That matters. It matters even more on the road, in a divisional spot, against a team that should not be scared of the moment.
The Broncos have also been living off a couple of results that may look better on paper than they really are. The wins over the Jaguars and Rams stand out, sure, but both came at home and both were comeback wins. That is not the same thing as rolling into a road spot and controlling the flow from start to finish.
I actually think that matters a lot here. This is a tough trip for an anemic passing attack. If Denver cannot consistently create clean answers through the air, then every possession gets heavier. Every drive gets a little more stressful. That is where an underdog can hang around.
The injury picture pushes me the other way
There is also the matter of who may not be out there.
Denver could be without both top cornerbacks, Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss. At the same time, the Chargers are expected to be without both starting tackles Joe Alt and Rashawn Slater. So yes, there are injury concerns on the LA offensive line.
Still, the Broncos losing both starting corners is a major piece of the puzzle. It softens a defense that public bettors may still want to trust because of reputation alone. If Denver is not winning the line-of-scrimmage battle the way people expect, then that defensive edge is not nearly as strong as it looks at first glance.
The NFL.com matchup notes even point out that if Denver generates pressure, life should get easier on its corners. That is fair. But that is also the key, it is an if. In a divisional game like this, I do not want to lay a number that assumes everything works out cleanly for the road favorite.
This number is too generous
Finally, the spread is doing a lot of the work here.
I only make this line -1.5. That is a pretty big gap from the current number. When I can take a home divisional dog getting more than a field goal, I pay attention. Those spots have been 66% ATS at this point in the season, and that fits the way I am looking at this matchup.
The Chargers do not need to light up the scoreboard to cash here. They just need stops, a steady enough offensive plan, and a few plays from Herbert when it matters. That is a reasonable ask at home, especially against a Denver team that has not exactly backed up the defensive hype with strong overall numbers so far.
If the public keeps leaning on the Broncos defense, I get it. I just do not see enough separation to lay 3.5 on the road in a divisional spot.
My play is Chargers +3.5 at -110, 1.5 units.
