Monday Night Football: Seahawks vs Broncos

A low-total script points in one direction

This Seahawks @ Broncos matchup sets up as a lower scoring spot from the start. The total sits at 40.5, Denver is a 2.5-point home underdog, and the preview around this matchup has centered on two dominant defenses. That matters.

Actually, it matters a lot.

When a number lands this low, I want to ask a simple question, who controls tempo, who controls possessions, and which passing options are most likely to feel the squeeze? In this spot, I’m projecting Seattle to help win time of possession, and I expect both teams to lean into the run early. That already puts pressure on the passing volume in Denver’s offense.

Why Denver’s passing attack is the fade

Bo Nix has not exactly been driving a high-efficiency aerial attack through five games. He comes into this matchup with 942 passing yards, 6 TDs, and 3 INTs on 162 attempts, while Denver is averaging 5.8 yards per pass attempt. That is not the kind of profile I want to chase into a defense like Seattle’s.

Seattle’s defense has been one of the league’s best entering this matchup, ranking first in the NFL in yards per play, interceptions, takeaways, net yards per game, and passing yards allowed per game. That is a tough environment already. Then you layer in the game script, a low total, a Broncos side that is a home underdog, and a matchup where Denver may have to lean on the ground game more than the air.

We have already seen recent signs of that direction too. Denver posted its highest called-run rate of the season at 49.1% and its lowest pass rate over expected at -7.7% in one recent game. That is a pretty clear hint of where Sean Payton may want to go when the setup says keep things manageable.

Waddle’s role does not help

Now to the prop itself.

Jaylen Waddle has had trouble fitting into this offense, and that is the key part of the handicap. He also spends a decent amount of time in the slot, which is not where Nix likes to go with his passes. So even if Denver throws enough to keep Waddle involved, the route to a big reception count is not clean.

And finally, his recent output does not help the case for the over. Waddle had only 2 catches in his most recent game, and CBS noted that Nix’s 27 passes went for only 123 yards in that contest. That is the kind of passing environment where the market can overestimate target quality and underestimate how quickly a receiver can disappear when the offense is trying to stay efficient.

The prop market is also leaning in the same direction. Covers has Waddle’s under 4.5 receptions at 61% in its projections page, and sharp money has been pushing his props toward the unders as well. When the market and the matchup line up, I usually pay attention.

The read

This is not a spot where I want to force a Denver passing breakout. The total says lower scoring. Seattle’s defense says difficulty through the air. The recent Broncos approach says run-heavy potential. And Waddle’s usage does not give me much confidence that he clears a number like this with ease.

So I’m staying with the market move and the game script.

Pick: Jaylen Waddle under 4.5 receptions at -145, 0.5 units.
