Monday Night Football: Commanders at 49ers Preview

I waited on this one, and finally the number landed in a spot I can use.

When this line opened at -7 last week, I wanted to see how far it would go. I was hoping for more movement, and while it did climb a bit, settling at 7.5 is good enough for me. That matters here, because I do not want to force a side when the market is already telling me the price is getting a little heavy. At 7.5, there is enough cushion to buy into the road team without needing a perfect script.

Why I am not running from Washington

The reaction to Washington right now is loud, and that is part of the appeal.

They just blew a 14-point fourth-quarter lead and ended up in a 27-27 tie with the Giants. That is the kind of result that creates immediate negativity, and I want to see if the market has pushed too far because of it. Jayden Daniels also said the botched finish was “on me,” so there is accountability hanging over the offense heading into Monday night.

That said, I am not ready to treat Washington as a team that suddenly cannot compete. Their defense has been pretty good against the run, and the offense is still more than capable with Daniels at QB. If you are laying a full touchdown or more against a team with that kind of quarterback play, you need to be sure the gap is real. I am not sure it is.

The other piece here is simple. Washington does not need to win the game. It only needs to stay inside the number. After what happened last time out, that is exactly the kind of bounce-back setup I want to buy at a discount.

San Francisco has reasons for caution too

San Francisco is undefeated at 5-0 and comes in off a 32-29 road win over Seattle. That looks strong on the surface, and it absolutely should command respect.

But I do not see a clean, untouched profile on the 49ers side either. Their defense has been holding up, yet it is also a unit trending downward with injuries. Deebo Samuel and Nick Bosa are both out, and there are other defensive absences in the mix. That is not the same kind of full-strength spot people may be picturing when they see a home favorite on Monday night.

The receiving group also carries some uncertainty, with Mike Evans and Christian Kirk listed questionable. So while San Francisco has the better record, the health picture is not exactly spotless. That matters when the line is asking a lot.

Last week also gave the 49ers some help in spots that are not always repeatable. They had the advantage of a comical fumble in the end zone that led to a score, plus Darnold’s lack of mobility made life easier in that matchup. I do not want to overreact to one clean result when the underlying injury situation is still working against them.

The matchup angle I like most

The best part of the Washington case is Daniels.

I think his legs can do more damage tonight. That is the kind of element that can keep a favorite honest, especially when the defense on the other side is not operating at full strength. If Washington can move the chains with Daniels, it becomes much harder for San Francisco to pull away late.

And from a betting angle, I keep coming back to the same thing. Fading home favorites who returned home after a close win on the road and now face a team below .500 has been very profitable, going 24-6-2 ATS (77.4%) over the last 10 seasons and 3-0 so far this season. That does not guarantee anything, of course, but it fits the setup here better than the market price suggests.

I am not asking Washington to be better than San Francisco. I am asking it to be competitive enough to live inside the number, and I believe that is the more reasonable side of this spread.
