Monday Night Free Pick: Commanders at 49ers

Monday night gives us a pretty clear angle in San Francisco.

Washington enters at 1-3, and the backfield situation is enough to make me look at the receiving market instead of trying to force a rushing angle. Without JCM available, Rachaad White could be in line for a larger workload. That matters. When usage starts moving around in a spot like this, the cleanest path is often the one that does not require a big run script.

Why I am not chasing the ground game

San Francisco has been tough against the run. The 49ers rank top 7 versus the run, and the numbers back it up. They are allowing 97.6 opponent rushing yards per game, 3.7 yards per carry, and only 3 rushing TDs allowed.

That is not the kind of matchup where I want to assume easy success on the ground.

Actually, it makes a lot more sense to expect Washington’s backs to be pushed into more of a short-area role. Jeremy McNichols is questionable, and Jacory Croskey-Merritt did not participate in practice, so there is at least some reason to expect backfield usage to be redistributed. When that happens, the receiving work can become the more reliable piece.

The air is where San Francisco can be attacked

This is the key part of the handicap. The 49ers can be had through the air, and that includes running backs.

They allow 7+ RB receptions per game on average, which is most in the NFL. That is exactly the kind of profile I want when I am backing a receiving prop on a back. You do not need a huge play. You do not need a perfect script. You just need a defense that routinely gives up catches to the position, and a player who can absorb a few of those looks.

Rachaad White has also already shown receiving usage this month, with 7 receptions in October. So this is not a pure projection play built on nothing. There is already some evidence of passing-game involvement, and that gives me more comfort in a prop like this than I would have with a back who has not been used in that area.

Why the number works

13.5 receiving yards is not a high bar.

That is the point. You are not asking White to carry an offense or rip off a big run against a defense that has been sound up front. You are asking for a couple of catches in a game where the matchup leans toward underneath work and where the 49ers have already shown a willingness to allow production to running backs in the passing game.

Finally, the number is small enough that the path is simple. White does not need volume on the ground to cash here. A modest receiving role can do it, and that is exactly what this setup points to.
