Monday Night MLB Wild Card: Cubs vs Padres
Here’s the angle on Cubs at Padres, and it’s actually pretty simple once you step back from the surface form.
San Diego is the team that finished the regular season with more shine. The Padres closed at 91-71, had home-field advantage, and came into October off an 8-2 run over their last 10. Chicago, on the other hand, finished 89-73 and only went 5-5 over its last 10. So if you stop there, it is easy to see why people would lean toward the Padres.
But postseason betting is not always about who looked best over the final handful of days. In spots like this, you have to ask whether the market is paying too much respect to a late surge, especially when the numbers are not creating a huge gap elsewhere. MLB’s own Wild Card preview pointed out that neither club really came in red-hot, and both teams were under .500 in September. That matters. It tells me the hot-hand story is probably being stretched a little too far.
The pitching setup is closer than the market may want
This is where the price starts to matter.
Padres starter Michael King comes in at 12-10 with a 3.21 ERA. Cubs starter Matthew Boyd finished 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA. Same ERA, and both sides have a starter who can keep the matchup from turning into a runaway. That is a big part of why I do not want to lay the more expensive side here.
When pitching is this even, the conversation shifts to lineup value, and I think that is where Chicago has a real argument. The Cubs lineup gives you something that can play in a short series, especially at this price. If you are asking which offense gives you the better betting value in a matchup where the starters line up pretty evenly, I think Chicago is the side that starts to make more sense.
And finally, this is not some unfamiliar October puzzle. These clubs are meeting in the postseason for the second straight year. That kind of familiarity usually trims the edge a little on the home side, because both clubs already have a sense of what the other brings. In a spot like that, I do not need to overthink the home-field angle.
Why the Padres price feels a little rich
The Padres are being asked to carry a lot of expectation because they closed strong and they are at home. That is understandable. But strong finishes do not always carry cleanly into October, and we see that postseason regression happen all the time. A team can look locked in right up until the market starts asking it to win again against a similar opponent with a comparable starter and a live lineup.
There is also a roster wrinkle worth noting. San Diego lost Luis Rengifo for the season with a torn ACL/MCL sprain, and that removes a recent contributor from the mix. On the other side, Chicago got a notable boost from Alex Bregman returning from multiple facial fractures and then putting together a 4-for-4, two-homer performance in Game 162. That does not decide the series by itself, but it does matter when you are looking for the club with more usable pieces in the lineup.
So when I put it all together, I do not see a huge gap between these teams. I see a Padres team that got hot at the right time, a Cubs team with a lineup I trust at this number, and a pitching matchup that feels even enough to make the plus money stand out.
I think the market is giving San Diego too much credit for the finish, and not enough credit to what Chicago can do in a game like this. So I will gladly take the value.
