Auburn already showed the blueprint

The first thing I want to point to here is Auburn’s opener against Baylor. That 17-16 final score does not tell the full story at all. There were over 800 yards of total offense in that game, and Auburn played at an incredibly fast tempo. That matters, because in a new era under Golesh, the pace is not some side note. It is the identity.

Actually, that is what makes this number stand out.

When a team is moving that quickly, volume comes naturally. More snaps, more possessions, more chances to score. And Auburn already showed it can create a lot of offensive activity even in a game that stayed tight right down to the end. The Tigers also found a way to score late and finish the job, which tells me the offense can keep pushing even when the game state gets messy.

Now they come home for the first time in the Golesh era, and that is a spot I want to back.

The matchup sets up cleanly

Southern Miss is walking into a much softer defensive test than the one Auburn saw in the opener, and that is the key point. Auburn does not need to be perfect here. It just needs to keep the tempo high and keep getting to the spots it wants to reach. If that happens, the scoring can pile up fast.

I think people sometimes look at a 17-point opener and assume the offense was limited. I do not see it that way. Auburn moved the ball, created yardage, and showed the kind of pace that can overwhelm a weaker opponent once the rhythm settles in. The first game also came with plenty to clean up, which is actually a good thing for this kind of play. If the offense already looked active while still leaving room for improvement, then a home date against softer resistance gives us the right kind of setup.

Auburn also has a little extra push here. This is the first home game of the Golesh era, and the Tigers are looking for their 10th straight home-opening win. That is not the reason to make the bet, but it adds to the confidence. Home, tempo, and a defense that should be less demanding than the opener, that combination is enough for me.

Why the team total is the better angle

I like focusing on the Auburn team total instead of trying to overthink the full game. That keeps the read simple.

If Auburn controls the pace the way it did against Baylor, the Tigers do not need help from Southern Miss to cash. They only need their own offense to keep humming. And with the kind of tempo Golesh is bringing, the number can climb quickly once Auburn gets rolling. I actually expect this line to rise, which is another reason to stay ahead of it now.

The part I keep coming back to is this, Auburn already proved the offense can generate volume, and now the setup is even better at home. The opener showed the ceiling. This matchup gives the cleaner path to reach it.
