Sunday MLB Pick: Nationals vs Athletics
Sunday’s MLB card gives us a spot where the starting pitcher angle feels stronger than the game around it.
Foster Griffin takes the ball for Washington, and the case here starts with simple consistency. He has allowed 6 or less hits in 9 straight starts and in 16 of 19 starts overall this season. These trends are nice but the opponent is what makes this worth betting.
Why Griffin Still Profiles Well Here
Griffin has gone under this in 8 of 10 games away from home, which fits the kind of spot we are looking at Sunday. If a pitcher is already doing the job most of the time, then finding a road angle that supports it only adds more weight to the play.
He is 10-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 19 starts. He's gone seven straight starts allowing one run or fewer. That is the kind of run you want behind a hits prop, because it tells you batters are not getting easy traffic or stringing together much clean contact.
There is also a clear contact profile here - Griffin has allowed 64 hits in 78.0 innings with a .219 opponent batting average. That supports the idea that the batters facing him are not doing much with his stuff. When a pitcher controls the zone, limits walks, and keeps the ball off barrels, the hits ladder can stay short even if the outing goes deep.
The Athletics Match up Poorly
The other side of this is Oakland’s spot after a huge offensive output yesterday. That kind of result tends to create a little market noise, because people remember the big number and want to chase the follow-up. I do not love that angle here.
The Athletics are very inconsistent, and that is the key part. One big showing does not automatically mean a steady carryover, especially when the matchup changes and the opposing starter has been rolling.
And finally, there is the price action. Some books have already moved this down to 5.5, which is never something I ignore on a prop like this. When the market starts leaning the same way, it usually means sharp money or respected opinion is seeing the same thing: Griffin’s hit suppression is real, and the number may have been posted a touch too high.
While Washington’s offense can do enough, I think it's more likely that the Athletics can cool off after a huge outburst, and Griffin has the recent track record to keep this in line. I think the under remains the stronger side of the prop.
Pick: Foster Griffin UNDER 6.5 HITS (-150), 1 unit
