Saturday MLB Pick: Blue Jays vs Phillies
If I had to land on one MLB play today, it would be this spot in Philadelphia.
Not because it is flashy. Not because it feels complicated. Actually, it is the opposite. Sometimes the strongest read comes from the cleanest setup, and this one checks a few boxes that I keep coming back to when I handicap baseball.
Philadelphia is at home off a loss, and Toronto is walking into a spot that feels a little too busy for comfort. The Blue Jays used their bullpen a bunch to pull out yesterday’s win, and that matters more than people want to admit. When a pen has already been asked to carry a heavy load, it does not just reset overnight because the calendar flipped. If anything, the effect can linger into the next start, especially when the starter on the mound is not exactly in a spot to take pressure off anybody.
That is where Max Scherzer comes in, and I am not eager to back him here.
Toronto had the makeup game in Chicago on Thursday, then had to head to Philly, exhaust the bullpen, and now turn around with Scherzer, who has been struggling. I do not see him going deep into the game, and that is a big problem in this matchup.
There is also a very real matchup angle here from Scherzer’s recent work against Philadelphia. His most recent MLB start against the Phillies was rough, five runs in 3 1/3 innings in the Blue Jays’ 7-4 loss on June 11, and he needed 82 pitches to get through it.
On the other side, Aaron Nola is not my favorite arm in a vacuum, but he has certainly been in better form than Scherzer in this exact matchup.
And if you look at the bigger picture, Philadelphia’s bullpen has also been under strain from starters not consistently working deep, so the need for quality innings is real on both sides. Still, at home, with the chance to control the game from the opening frames, the Phillies are in the better position to manage that stress.
This is also the kind of situational spot I like to lean into. Home favorites above .500, on a homestand, off a loss have gone 456-268, which is 63%. That is not a random note to me. It speaks to a team in a solid bounce-back setup, at home, with a chance to respond after a loss while the opponent is dealing with travel and pitching questions.
So when I step back and put it all together, I keep landing on the same side. Toronto is in a tough bullpen and travel spot, Scherzer does not inspire much confidence right now, and Philadelphia has the cleaner path to control this one at home.
