Wednesday's MLB Free Pick: Rangers vs Angels

If you're looking at Rangers-Angels tonight, I actually think the cleanest read is on Cal Quantrill's outs line.

This number feels a touch light.

Quantrill has only made 7 starts this season, so there is still a little bit of noise in the profile. That part matters. Early in a season, or early in a starter's run of work, it can take a minute to figure out where the real baseline is. But if you take away the first two outings as the kind of starts that can come while he was shaking off the rust, the picture gets a lot better from an over angle. In 4 of 5 starts, he has worked at least 5 innings.

That is the key here. Over 13.5 outs does not ask for a huge outing. It asks for 14 outs, and if Quantrill is anywhere near that 5-inning range again, the ticket has a real path.

Why the number feels short

Sometimes the market hangs a line that is still catching up to the pitcher instead of where he is now. That is the feeling here.

So when I look at 13.5 outs, I do not see a number that fully respects his more stable range.

Honestly, I think this should probably be closer to 14.5.

The matchup helps

The Angels side of this is part of why the over makes sense.

Their lineup does not scare anybody, and there are enough injury issues on that side to keep the whole group from feeling especially dangerous. When you pair that with a team context that has not been very strong overall, it becomes easier to trust a starter to work into the middle innings without a ton of pressure.

There is also a small situational piece here. The Angels won last night in a close game, and they have been a poor team after a win this season. That does not guarantee anything, of course, but it is one of those angles that matters when you are deciding whether a borderline prop should move up or down in your stack of plays. In spots like this, I actually like leaning into the team profile that keeps the starter from being pushed out early.

Quantrill does not need to dominate. He just needs to avoid an early hook, and against this lineup, that feels very workable.

Final read

This is not a flashy play. It is a simple one. Quantrill has shown enough recent length to make 13.5 outs look short, the Angels matchup does not create much fear, and the number feels like it should be higher.

I am playing CAL QUANTRILL (TEX) OVER 13.5 OUTS at -124 for 1 unit.
