Monday MLB Free Pick: Braves at Twins
I'm going back to the Braves tonight.
Actually, this is one of those spots where the win-loss result from last night can pull people in the wrong direction. Minnesota finally snapped its losing streak, so the surface reaction is going to be, “maybe they’re turning it around.” But when you look a little deeper, I still see more reasons to trust Atlanta in this matchup.
The Braves are still the steadier side
The Braves have been finding ways to win, and that matters a lot here. They’re riding a five-game winning streak after rallying past Cleveland 5-4 on Aug. 17, and that came after they trailed 4-1 after four innings. That is a pretty good sign in spots like this, because it tells you Atlanta is not relying on one clean path to the finish line.
Even in that win, the bullpen showed up. Aaron Bummer threw two scoreless innings, and Dylan Lee, Pierce Johnson, and Raisel Iglesias each worked a scoreless frame. So while the offense had to dig out of a hole, the pitching side held firm when it mattered.
That is part of why I like Atlanta here. The Braves had multiple chances to tie or take the lead in their last outing and nobody could come through, but I am not going to overreact to one frustrating night when the broader form is still pointing their way. Sometimes a lineup runs into a game where the final hit does not land. That does not automatically change the read the next night.
Minnesota’s win still left a lot on the table
Minnesota did end its losing streak, but the shape of that win is exactly why I am not rushing to back them again.
The Twins got a 4 spot in the first inning, then did nothing offensively for the rest of the game. That is not the kind of offensive performance I want to treat as a full reset. Yes, the win counts, and yes, the streak is over. But a big early cushion can make a game look better than it really was.
That matters even more when you add in the bullpen note. Minnesota’s bullpen has thrown a lot lately and might be thin. If that is the case, then this is the exact type of spot where Atlanta can keep pressure on late. I do not need the Braves to be perfect. I just need them to be the team with the cleaner pitching path and the more reliable finish.
ESPN’s matchup page also lists Atlanta at 11-7 overall and Minnesota at 11-7 at home, with the Twins carrying a .254 opponent batting average allowed and a 4.04 team ERA entering the game. Those are not numbers I am dismissing. They tell you Minnesota has some real stability in the profile. But in this matchup, I still come back to the stronger recent form and the pitching setup.
The key thing for me is simple. Atlanta just kept pushing, even after falling behind. Minnesota got its win, but the offense cooled off fast after the first inning. If you are trying to decide which side has the better chance to carry the same kind of pressure into tonight, I think it is the Braves.
So I’m backing Braves ML at -118 for 1 unit.
