Monday's MLB Preview: Rangers vs White Sox

There is a spot here that actually looks a little better for Texas than the market is treating it.

Chicago has survived the Mets, and credit where it is due, back-to-back walk-off wins do matter in the standings. But I do think the bigger picture tells a different story. The White Sox really should have lost that series, and the offense was quiet for most of it. MLB’s game story noted they had gone 15 innings without scoring before that late comeback, which is not exactly the kind of stretch that makes me want to lay a short number.

That is the part I keep coming back to. A couple dramatic finishes can make a team feel hotter than it really is. I do not buy that here. If you are relying on the final swing to cover up the rest of the workload, eventually the market catches up.

Why Texas makes more sense here

The Rangers are not streaking or anything, and I am not trying to sell you a fairy tale. But I line this closer to even money for a team still in the division race, and that matters. Texas also comes in off a win, beating the Angels 5-3 before this series, so we are not dealing with a club walking into the opener with no confidence at all.

That is important in a road dog spot. There is a difference between a team that is free-falling and a team that is simply priced a little too cheaply. Texas fits the second bucket much better. The record, the situation, and the number all point in the same direction.

And finally, the trend angle lines up with it. Road dogs below .500 off of a win and starting a new series have been excellent, going 36-30 with a 27% ROI. That is exactly the kind of setup I want to pay attention to. It is not flashy, but it is real, and it has been profitable.

Chicago still has some questions in the mix

The other side is not exactly spotless either. Chicago has had to deal with Davis Martin landing on the 15-day IL with a blister, and José Urquidy was recalled to help cover the rotation. That does not automatically mean trouble, but it does keep the pitching picture from feeling especially stable.

Texas has its own injury and transaction noise too, so I am not pretending one side is perfectly clean. Still, when I compare the two, I am left with the same read. Chicago is getting too much respect for surviving a series it probably should have lost, while Texas is being priced like a team that has no business being in the race.

I think that is where the mistake is.

The White Sox have the better recent headlines, sure. The Rangers have the better betting spot.
