Tuesday Night MLB Free Pick: Phillies vs Mariners

If you want a clean prop read tonight, I actually think the market is giving Aaron Nola a little too much credit for one strong outing.

Yes, he went deep in his last start. That part matters. But props like this are not really about whether a pitcher can deliver a good start, they are about whether he can keep doing it long enough to clear the number. In Nola’s case, 17.5 outs asks for six full innings, and that is where the recent pattern starts to matter.

The simplest case against the over is right there in the season log. Nola has gone under 17.5 outs in 18 of 26 starts this year. That is not a tiny sample, and it is not the kind of trend I want to ignore when the price is only -105. He did throw 7.0 innings in his last outing, but even that does not erase what has happened before it. Before that start, his logs read 5.0, 5.0, 6.0, and 5.2. That is a very clear picture of a pitcher who can work well without always getting all the way through six.

And that is really the key here. One deeper outing does not mean the leash has changed.

The recent pattern still leans short

What stands out most is that Nola has not gone 6 innings in back to back games since April. That is exactly the kind of detail I want when I am looking at an outs prop. It tells me the number is not being built around a random one-off. It tells me the books know he can go deep, but the recent rhythm still has more short finishes than long ones.

Even the verified context lines up with that. MLB’s game preview has Nola carrying a 2.51 ERA with 34 strikeouts over his last five starts, so he is pitching well. But pitching well and working deep are two different things. A clean line, a lot of strikeouts, and still no real stretch of extended outings in the recent log, that is exactly the kind of profile that can land under this number again.

Seattle can make him work

The Mariners also matter here, and not just because they are at home.

Seattle has been swinging it better against right-handed pitching lately, and that is the matchup angle that gives this play some real shape. The Mariners’ recent results show a stretch of games against right-handed starters, and the production against righties has been respectable in those spots. That matters tonight because Nola is stepping into a lineup that has actually been doing something with that type of arm.

The Monday note from MLB adds more to it. Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez homered in the same game, only the third time they have done that this season. That is the kind of detail that tells me Seattle’s core bats are active heading into this series. You do not need a huge offensive surge to hurt an outs prop, you only need enough traffic to push a starter out a little earlier than planned.

That is where this play has its edge. Nola does not need to get rocked for the under to cash. He just needs a normal Seattle night, a little traffic, a pitch count that climbs, and suddenly six innings is off the table again.

So even with a strong last start, and even with the respect Nola deserves, I like the trend, I like the matchup, and I like the recent Seattle bat profile. Finally, I am backing Aaron Nola UNDER 17.5 OUTS at -105 for 1 unit.
