Thursday MLB Free Pick: Royals at Blue Jays

I actually like this spot a lot more than the final score from yesterday would suggest.

Kansas City got blanked on Aug. 26, and when a team comes back the next day in the same matchup, that result can matter more than people want to admit. Even better for the Royals, the line is moving their way. When you see support show up after a shutout loss, especially when the market starts leaning toward the road side, that is usually worth paying attention to.

Why the setup works

The first thing here is the pitching matchup, because that is where the edge starts to build.

Noah Cameron has been really strong lately, and MLB’s preview backs that up with a 1.05 ERA in his last 6 starts since calling his own pitches, plus 4 scoreless outings in that span. That is the kind of run that can carry a road team in a spot like this. If you are looking for a reason to trust Kansas City away from home, Cameron is it.

And honestly, Toronto has not made this an easy landing spot for opposing left-handed pitching. That matters here because Cameron gives Kansas City a starter who can control the shape of the night. If he is locating and keeping Toronto from stacking clean contact, the Royals do not need much offense to stay in control.

The other piece is the Blue Jays bullpen. It has already been used quite a bit recently, and that matters after a shutout win where relief arms had to finish the job. Toronto did exactly that on Aug. 26, taking a 3-0 win over Kansas City, but that kind of game can leave a little more behind for the next night. If the bullpen has to cover more innings again, that starts to tilt the spot a little more toward Kansas City.

I always pay attention when a line moves toward the team coming off a shutout loss. That is a strong situational angle, and it matters even more when the team in question has actually been on a good run overall.

That is Kansas City right now. Yesterday’s result was ugly, no doubt, but it does not erase the bigger picture. That does not mean he cannot settle in, but it does give Kansas City a path to pressure early if the command is not sharp.

You have a market that is moving toward Kansas City anyway.

You have Cameron in a really strong groove.

You have Toronto facing a left-handed arm while also dealing with a bullpen that has been asked to do plenty recently.

Finally, you have the simple fact that the Royals are still playing good baseball overall, so I am not overreacting to one shutout loss in a matchup where the pitching and market both point the same direction.
