Wednesday's MLB Pick: Blue Jays vs Guardians

Running it back on Toronto makes a lot of sense here.

This is one of those spots where the first result can push the price a little farther than it should go, and I think that is actually what we are seeing with the Blue Jays. They were right there in the opener, then the whole thing got away late. That kind of loss can make a number look cleaner on the other side than it really is.

I am not overreacting to one bad finish.

Why Toronto still makes sense

The Blue Jays come right back into Progressive Field on Wednesday night, and this is still a solid chance to back them on the moneyline. Dylan Cease is listed on the mound for Toronto, and that matters a lot in a spot like this. Cease brings the kind of top-end profile that can keep a road team in control even if the offense is not doing anything flashy early.

Toronto has the arm edge here, and when I look at the price at -128, I actually think it is a little cheap.

That is the simple read. If you are getting a starter of that caliber in a spot where the market just watched Toronto leave the door open in the first meeting, I think the value is still on the Blue Jays side. The opener did not show a Cleveland team that just ran Toronto off the field from start to finish. It showed a tight game that turned late.

And that matters.

The first game should not scare you off

Cleveland won the opener 6-1, but that score does not tell the full story of how the game felt before it tilted. Toronto was still in position before things broke open late. Gavin Williams was the headline in that one, striking out 13, and Cleveland cashed in with late power from Angel Martínez and Angel Genao.

That is a tough way to lose, no question.

Still, I do not want to hand too much weight to a late collapse when Toronto gets the same matchup again, this time with Cease listed as the starter. The Jays are back on the road trip, back in the same setting, and back in a spot where the price is asking for a reasonable answer rather than a full-blown rebound story.

That is where I land on Toronto.

You are not asking for a perfect performance. You are asking for the better starter, the tighter number, and a team that was already close to cashing in the opener before it slipped away. That is enough for me to keep riding them.

Finally, I like the fact that this is not some inflated number. At -128, Toronto does not need to do anything dramatic. They just need to hold up better than they did late in the first meeting, and I think Cease gives them a real chance to do exactly that.
