Wednesday Night NFL Preview: Patriots vs Seahawks

We've finally got our first actual NFL play to see action, and I actually like landing here in the Wednesday night matchup.

This is not the type of bet that needs a perfect script. It just needs Seattle to stay true to what the team has been showing us in preseason and preview coverage, which is a tight end room that can matter more than people may be pricing in right now. AJ Barner sits at the center of that idea.

Why Barner stands out

Barner was very good as a rookie, even if last season came with several nagging injuries. That part matters, because the concern was never really talent. It was whether he could stay available enough to hold onto a meaningful role.

Now he is entering the opener back at full health, and Seattle’s own depth chart has him listed as the top tight end ahead of Eric Saubert, Elijah Arroyo, and Nick Kallerup. That matters too. If Barner is first in line at a position the Seahawks already expect to use, then his path to volume is pretty clear.

And volume is really the whole case here.

Last season, Barner turned in career highs with 52 catches, 519 yards, and 6 touchdowns. That is not empty usage. That is a real piece of the passing game. So when the market gives me a modest receiving number, I do not need to project some huge breakout. I only need Seattle to keep feeding a player who already showed he can handle it.

The OC angle is real

There is also a coaching fit here that I actually like a lot.

Brian Fleury was hired after previously serving as San Francisco’s run game coordinator and tight ends coach, and Seattle described him as bringing continuity plus a TE-friendly background to the offense. That fits cleanly with the way the Seahawks have talked about using their tight ends.

Seattle’s own preview coverage said the team relied heavily on tight ends in 2025 and expect to do so again in 2026 under Fleury. That is the kind of detail I want when I am looking at a prop in the early part of the season. It tells me the role is not a fluke, and it is not just a one-week matchup trick either. It points to a real offensive lane.

If you combine that with Fleury’s background, the picture gets even better. A coordinator with a TE-heavy background taking over an offense that already leaned on the position is usually not a spot where I want to fade the first guy in line.

Targets are there to be taken

Another piece I like here is the structure of Seattle’s passing game.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba leads the receiver room, and Seattle’s own preseason story made it clear that after JSN, Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed, and Tory Horton, the rest of the target distribution is still in play. That is exactly the kind of setup where a tight end can quietly clear a number like this.

I do not need Barner to be the featured option. I just need him to be part of the share that is still floating around after the top names. If Seattle is serious about spreading the ball and using the tight end room more often, Barner has a strong chance to land in the middle of that work.

New England’s injury report also leaves a small note in the background, since RB TreVeyon Henderson is out. That can matter if the Patriots end up leaning more on the pass, and if Seattle controls the script enough to keep its offense steady throughout the night. Either way, it does not hurt the case.

At the end of the day, I am not trying to force a complicated angle here. I am backing the tight end who is first on the depth chart, healthy heading into the opener, and tied to a coaching setup that should feature him.
