Wednesday Night NFL Pick: Patriots vs Seahawks

I was only planning to live in props on this one because I did not think we would see a flat 3. Actually, that number changes everything.

When the market sits on a key number like this, it forces a real decision. If you were waiting for something softer, it is not there. And if you were hoping to grab Seattle at -3.5, I would pass. That half point matters, and I am not interested in paying it in a spot like this.

Why the number matters

Seattle is expected to regress offensively after losing Kubiak and Walker, so I am not trying to sell a huge ceiling here. That is not the angle. The angle is that the price is still too short.

Back in the Super Bowl, Seattle closed at -5 on a neutral field. Now it is sitting at -3 with homefield. That is a meaningful move. If a team was worth -5 on neutral, then asking for only -3 at home feels like the market has gone a little too far the other way.

That is especially true because New England still has the same core issue that caused the lopsided Super Bowl in the first place. The Patriots offensive line cannot stop this pass rush. That is the matchup problem I keep coming back to, and I do not see a clean fix for it here.

New England did add help on the outside with A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, and that does matter. It gives the offense more to work with, and it absolutely raises the ceiling compared to where this team has been. But adding receivers does not automatically solve protection problems. If the pocket is collapsing early, those weapons do not have enough time to matter.

And that is why I keep landing on Seattle.

The pass rush still decides it

The Patriots injury report does not make this any easier, either. Center Ben Brown is out, and TreVeyon Henderson is out as well. I am not going to overstate that, but it is not the kind of setup that makes me comfortable trusting New England in a road spot against a pass rush that already created problems once before.

On the other side, Seattle has a couple names worth watching on the injury report, with Nick Emmanwori questionable and Tory Horton questionable. Still, that does not change the main handicap for me. The bigger question is whether New England can handle the front. Based on what we already know, that answer is probably no.

There is also a trend angle that fits the same side. Over the last 25 Super Bowl losers, those teams have gone 5-20 ATS in Week 1 the following season, and 3-13 ATS when on the road. I do not like building a play on one trend alone, but when the trend lines up with the matchup and the number, it matters.

So I am not trying to get cute here. I am not chasing a bigger price. I am not moving off the key number. The better side is Seattle, and the current line still leaves enough room to play it.

Finally, this is one of those spots where the market gave us a number that feels a touch light. I will take the Seahawks -3 at -115 for 1 unit.
