Monday Night Football Free Pick: Broncos vs Chiefs

Monday Night Football gives us a pretty strong way to open the season, because Broncos at Chiefs comes with a lot of noise around it and a number that has already started to move.

I do expect a lower-scoring grinder. That part feels pretty clear. Still, the total has that priced in, so I am not chasing points here. What stands out more is the spread, because we are starting to see 3s pop up, and I want the better number before it disappears.

Why the number matters

When a line is flirting with 3, the difference between grabbing 2.5 and laying 3 matters a lot more than people want to admit. In a divisional spot like this, every point has extra value. That is exactly why I want Chiefs -2.5 at -115 instead of waiting around and hoping the market stays friendly.

Kansas City also brings a very different feel into this opener than the record might suggest from last season. The Chiefs had an incredibly unlucky year, and it ended with the Mahomes injury. Now he looks fine and ready to go, and that matters a ton in a matchup lined this close.

Actually, the bigger point is simple. I want to play against Denver here.

Why I am not sold on Denver

The Broncos had a lot of fortunate wins last season, and they also beat this Chiefs team twice. That is the kind of result that can make a team look more dangerous than it really is from a betting angle.

And we already saw how extreme the ceiling can be in this matchup. Denver’s most recent win over Kansas City was a 38-0 blowout, with Bo Nix throwing for 321 yards and 4 touchdowns while the Chiefs were held to 98 offensive yards. That is a wild result, no question. But betting is about what comes next, not what happened in the most recent meeting.

That is where Kansas City starts to make more sense. NFL.com said Mahomes is on track to play Monday night after a full practice, and his goal remains to be out there in the Week 1 opener. If he is healthy early in the season, that profile has been elite in these closely lined spots. Mahomes in those games has gone 21-10 ATS, which is 68%.

That is not the only angle pointing the same direction either.

A spot that keeps showing value

Teams who got swept by a divisional opponent who made the playoffs in the previous season have gone 23-3 ATS, which is 88%. That is a strong enough trend to matter, especially in a setup where the market already wants to respect Denver after that latest result.

I also like that Kansas City is at home in the season opener at Arrowhead. The Chiefs’ official preview framed 2026 as a rebound year, and the key issue is still Mahomes’ health. If he is on the field, that is usually enough to keep Kansas City in the right range, especially in a divisional game where the margin matters.

Denver enters with no injury designations on the latest report, so I am not leaning on a health excuse there. This is more about the number, the matchup, and which side I trust when the line stays short.

Kansas City is not asking for much here. I am not laying a big number, and I do not need a runaway. I just need the Chiefs to handle a divisional opponent at home and finally cash the better side of a tight opener.

Play: Chiefs -2.5 at -115, 1.5 units.
