Packers-Lions Preview: A Number Worth Watching
I like this spot, and I like the timing of it even more.
If you grabbed Green Bay early, you already know why this matters. The number mattered. That 3.5 was the number to shop for, because once a game starts drifting toward 3, the value changes in a hurry. We are there now, or close enough to make the original read feel even better. That part is actually important, because this is not about chasing a side after the move. It is about seeing the matchup clearly before the market catches up.
Why Green Bay still looks live here
Green Bay’s offense has not looked broken in the way some people might want to label it. Early on, the Packers ran into a rough set of opponents. Minnesota was a difficult opening test, the Jets brought a very solid pass rush, the Falcons spot came on a short week after overtime, and Tampa Bay gave them a tough defensive look too. That is a pretty brutal path before you even really get going.
Now, when Green Bay finally got a step down in defensive opponents, the results started to show up. The Packers have won 2 in a row against the Bears and Cowboys, and the bigger point is that the passing game looked more comfortable once the matchup stopped asking so much of it.
That matters here because Detroit’s defense is still the problem.
Not a small issue, not a minor concern, the problem. The Lions are allowing 31.8 points per game, 423.8 yards per game, and rank 30th in defensive EPA per dropback. NFL.com has them in the bottom five of almost every major defensive category, including last in points per game allowed and last in yards per game allowed. That is a tough profile to trust, even with a bye week mixed in.
And I do not think the bye fixes what is going on here. Some issues are health based. Some are scheme based. This looks more like the second one.
Love in this matchup makes sense
Jordan Love has already shown what this matchup can look like. In his last 3 starts against Detroit, he has not thrown an interception, and he has averaged 30+ points in those starts. Last year, the Packers won both meetings handily against the Lions. That does not guarantee anything in this edition, of course, but it does tell us the quarterback and the system have already found answers here.
Green Bay’s pass defense also deserves a little respect in the broader picture. The Packers rank 10th in defensive EPA allowed, while Detroit sits 30th. That contrast matters in a division game where one team is trying to attack through the air and the other side is trying to keep up with a high-scoring offense of its own.
Detroit can still move the ball. The Lions are scoring 32.8 points per game, so nobody should pretend this is a clean path. But if you are asking which defense is more likely to create a problem in this spot, I think the answer is pretty clear. Green Bay’s pass defense ranks third in EPA per dropback and has allowed the fewest explosive passes. That gives this matchup a different feel than the market might be giving it.
Dan Campbell has even called Love the Packers’ “secret sauce,” which says a lot. If the other coach is openly talking about how dangerous that quarterback is, then we are not dealing with a hidden edge anymore. We are dealing with a matchup Detroit has to solve.
The coaching edge matters too
This is also the type of game where Matt LaFleur tends to shine. There is a coaching mismatch here, and I do not mind saying it that way. LaFleur is 27-12 ATS as an underdog in his career, including a 9-3 ATS mark when on the road in divisional games and 3-0 ATS as a dog in Detroit.
That is the kind of profile I want when I am already leaning toward the team with the better number, the cleaner passing outlook, and the defense that is not nearly as vulnerable.
Detroit coming off a bye adds some noise, sure. But the bigger story is still the same. Green Bay’s offense has a path here, Love has already handled this defense, and the Lions are still carrying a brutal defensive profile into a division matchup indoors.
I want the points, and I want them now.
