Sunday NFL Free Pick: Ravens at Colts

Our first NFL pick of the season is here, and I actually love where the value sits.

Baltimore at Indianapolis on Sep 13, 1:00 PM EDT is one of those openers where the number feels a little off from the start. I am not sure where this line is coming from, because when I look at these two teams, I do not see a gap anywhere near this size.

Last year, both sides dealt with QB injuries, and even with that in the mix, the overall profile was still very close. Baltimore and Indianapolis put up very similar stats on both sides of the ball, so if you are asking me why one team should be laying more than a field goal here, I do not have a great answer.

Why the line looks too high

The simple part is this, I cannot get my numbers higher than +1.5 in this game.

That is really the whole story. If my numbers are sitting there, and the market is hanging +3.5, then I have to lean into the price. I do not need to stretch for some big dramatic angle. The number itself is the angle.

And this is Week 1, which matters. A lot of these openers are built on assumptions, not proof. Baltimore is being asked to deal with a coaching change for the first time in a long time, and Lamar Jackson has never had a different coach before. That is not a small thing. Even great teams can take a minute to settle into new voices, new structure, and new habits.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis is in a much more comfortable spot than people may want to admit. The Colts are extremely well coached, and they have a great homefield. That matters in September, and it matters even more when you are catching points against a team that is being priced as if continuity carries more weight than it actually does.

Indianapolis has enough here

I also think people are forgetting what Indianapolis showed last season.

The Colts finished 8-9, and even with that record, the offense was productive. Top 10 in yards per game, yards per play, passing yards per game, points per game, and points per drive. That is not nothing. That tells me this is not some team that has to be rescued by a big number at home. They can score, they can stay in rhythm, and they can make a favored opponent work for every stop.

There is also a little more confidence in the building now. Chris Ballard and Shane Steichen are back for 2026, and that stability is part of why I am comfortable taking the points here. When you already have a well coached team, a good homefield, and an offense that can move the ball, you do not need much more to justify a play.

Baltimore has its own issues in this spot too. Nnamdi Madubuike has already been ruled out for the season opener, and that is not the kind of detail I want to ignore when the road side is being asked to cover a number this large. On top of that, there is always a difference between being the more respected team and being the better bet. Those are not the same thing.

Why I am playing it now

Honestly, I do not think +3.5 will be available when Week 1 rolls around.

That is another reason I am putting this in early and not waiting around. If you believe in the home side at all, you have to respect the current number. Once the market tightens up, the value can vanish fast. I would rather be early on the better price than late on the worse one.

Alec Pierce is also expected to play for Indianapolis, which only helps keep the offense in a better place entering the opener. I am not hanging the whole bet on that, but it is another plus for a home team that already has enough going for it.

So, when I step back and look at this matchup, I see two teams that were closer than the market is suggesting, a home team with real coaching stability, and a road team adjusting to a major change. That is enough for me.
