Thursday night gives us a pretty clean read in Buffalo, and I actually like when the angle is this simple. A lot of people will open the box score from Week 1, see Dawson Knox with 1 catch for 7 yards, and move on. That is exactly why this number still has some value.

Why Week 1 does not tell the whole story

Knox was not out there in a featured receiving role against Houston. Buffalo used him more as a blocker, which made sense against a ferocious pass rush. He still played 38 of 57 snaps and ran 12 routes, so the usage was not empty. It just did not show up in the way most bettors want to see.

That is the first thing to understand here. Week 1 was about survival up front. Knox helped with that. The Bills did not need him to win through the air in that spot, they needed him to help keep things steady. That worked.

Now the setup changes.

Detroit is not bringing the same kind of pass rush pressure Buffalo saw last Sunday, and the Lions are on short rest. That matters. It matters even more when the secondary is dealing with injury questions and the pass defense is already a real conversation after what happened against New Orleans.

NFL.com’s recap made it pretty clear, Detroit still needs to figure out how to protect the secondary. That lines up with what we saw last week, and tight ends have already been a problem area there. The Saints hit them hard at that spot, and that is not the kind of detail I want to ignore.

The matchup points toward the middle of the field

If you are looking for a path to Knox, it is not complicated. Buffalo does not need to force-feed him. They just need a couple of normal passing opportunities, and the matchup gives those a chance to come.

Detroit’s secondary is banged up enough that Buffalo should be able to pick spots, and the short turnaround only adds to that concern. Thursday night football can get sloppy in a hurry, especially on the defensive side, and that is where a tight end can quietly clear a modest number without much noise.

We also know Dalton Kincaid is the #1 tight end for the Bills. That matters here. Buffalo showed it in Week 1, using 13 personnel early and letting Knox and Jackson Hawes help create space for Kincaid. Kincaid finished with a team-high 5 catches for 130 yards on 6 targets, which tells you where the passing game wants to go when Buffalo is operating cleanly.

That is good news for Knox, not bad news.

When the top tight end draws the attention, the other tight end can benefit in a quieter way. Knox does not need a big target share to get there. He does not need Buffalo to change its whole offensive plan. He just needs to be involved enough to cash a small yardage number, and this is the kind of matchup where that can happen.

A low bar is still a live bar

That is really the entire case. We are not talking about a ceiling play. We are talking about a number that stays reachable if Knox gets 1-2 catches, and I think that is a fair expectation in this spot.

Buffalo’s offensive core is otherwise intact for Thursday night, so this does not feel like a game where the Bills have to hide parts of the passing attack. If anything, the structure should stay familiar, and that gives Knox a path to a few clean opportunities. With Detroit’s secondary situation and their issues vs tight ends, the over does not need much to land.

Finally, that is why I am comfortable here. The matchup is not asking Knox to do too much, and the number is light enough to work with a modest role.
