Free NFL Pick: Falcons vs Buccaneers
Actually, this is a major buy spot on Tampa Bay.
A lot of people are still going to look at the first part of the Buccaneers’ season and assume the number should stay cheap. I get that. Early results matter, and Tampa Bay did not have the kind of start anybody wanted. But the better read is what has started to shift, because finally there is a clear reason to back this team.
Last week was the kind of response that matters. Tampa Bay went to Carolina and handled business in a way that fit the profile of a defense-first cover. The Buccaneers won the turnover battle, the defense played lights out, and Baker Mayfield did not need to carry much at all. In fact, he only needed 11 pass attempts as Tampa Bay controlled the game from start to finish. That is a sign of a team that can win without forcing the issue, and those are the spots I actually want to buy.
The defense is the story
The biggest thing here is the Tampa Bay defense. That unit is the key, and it has been a lot better than the surface record might suggest. Once you adjust for schedule, this is a top 5 defense. That is not a small note, either. It means the Bucs have been bringing real resistance against some tough offensive opponents, and they are doing it in a way that can travel.
The recent Carolina result backed that up. Tampa Bay forced three turnovers, including a fumble returned for a touchdown, and the Panthers were buried in all three phases. The Bucs also gashed Carolina for 258 yards on the ground, which says a lot about how complete that performance was. When a team can dictate terms on both sides of the ball, the buy signal gets a lot stronger.
That matters in this matchup because Atlanta is not walking into something easy on the ground. Tampa Bay has been excellent against the run, and that is going to matter against Bijan. If the Falcons cannot create the running lane they want, the offense becomes a tougher build. That is where Tampa Bay’s pressure can really take over.
The Buccaneers also generate pressure on the quarterback, and that should matter against Penix. If you can force uncomfortable dropbacks, you can change the whole shape of the game. Tampa Bay does not need perfection on defense here. It just needs to make Atlanta work for everything, and that is a very reasonable ask.
The Falcons are coming off a tricky win
Atlanta’s last result will probably keep some people on the other side. The Falcons knocked off the previously unbeaten 49ers, and that always gets attention. But the box score told a different story. San Francisco outgained Atlanta 400 yards to 295, and the Falcons won 4-0 in turnovers. That is the kind of win that can look bigger than it actually was.
There is real value in separating the result from the performance. Atlanta deserves credit for finishing the game, and its defense did some good things. It held Brock Purdy to his second-lowest EPA per dropback of the season and limited Christian McCaffrey to 39 rushing yards on seven carries. That part is real.
Still, the underlying numbers say Tampa Bay is being offered at a price that is too soft. I line this near -3, so getting a cheap moneyline at -120 is exactly the kind of market setup I want to attack. The Falcons are also coming off a flukey win at home, while Tampa Bay is finally showing the kind of defensive form that can swing a divisional spot.
This is one of those cases where the better team to buy is the one that is just now turning the corner. The Buccaneers had the worst luck of any team to start the season, and that finally started to turn last week. The defense is the anchor, the matchup on the ground leans Tampa Bay, and the pressure profile should make life harder on Penix.
I think the price is still too cheap.
Take Buccaneers ML at -120 for 1.5 units.
