Free NFL Pick: Raiders vs Jets
Gross game, sure. But ugly does not mean untouchable, and I actually think the Jets are being priced a little too casually here.
That is the angle.
The market seems to be treating this as if both teams are living in the same neighborhood, when I do not see it that way at all. I line the game at -3, and the bigger point is simple, the Raiders feel worse than their record, worse than a three-game slide, and maybe even worse than people want to admit. When a team is already having trouble finishing drives, then starts stacking losses, the floor can drop fast.
That is where the defense matters. The Raiders defense has been absolutely brutal, and if they cannot slow anything down, every drive turns into a stress test. You do not want to be asking an offense to answer from behind when the other side can create pressure. That is where things usually fall apart.
Why the Jets match up well here
The Jets actually have a real path to control this one on defense. Their pass rush is the biggest difference in the matchup, and it is the kind of edge that can carry a mediocre-looking favorite in a spot like this. New York has 21 sacks, while Las Vegas has allowed 16 passing TDs and a 103.7 passer rating against. That is not a subtle mismatch.
If the Jets can force uncomfortable throws early, the Raiders offense has to do more than it wants to do. And once that happens, the whole operation gets messy. The notes say it clearly, when this offense is forced to play from behind, everything goes south. That is the part I keep coming back to.
The run defense gives New York another layer too. Through seven games, the Jets are allowing 4.1 yards per carry. So even if Las Vegas wants to lean on balance early, there is no easy answer waiting there either. Pressure on the quarterback, resistance on the ground, that is a decent formula when you are trying to trust a home side that is being overlooked.
The other side of the matchup
I also like the fact that the Jets should have room to move the ball against what the notes call the weakest defensive unit they have seen since week 1. That matters. If New York can get a few stops and pair that with just enough offensive rhythm, then the price starts to make more sense.
The Raiders have already shown the signs of a team that can slip away fast. NFL.com noted the offensive slide, the red-zone issues, and the lack of finishing power during this stretch. Then you layer in what happened in Week 7, when the defense was gashed early by the Rams and the team went only 1-for-5 in the red zone. That is not the profile I want to trust on the road in a game where the opponent can actually rush the passer.
Aaron Glenn matters here too. His background is defensive, and that is part of why this spot makes sense to me. There have already been decision-making storylines around this team earlier in the season, so yes, there is still a coaching element to manage. But if Glenn can be a normal functioning head coach this week, the Jets should be in position to do enough on both sides of the ball.
At the end of the day, I do not need beauty. I need the cleaner side, the stronger pressure profile, and the team more likely to dictate how the game is played. On paper, the Jets have that.
