Thursday Night Football Preview: Lions at Bills

This is one of those spots where the number tells the story before kickoff does.

I was waiting to see if we could grab a 2.5, because that would have been ideal. Actually, the market never really gave that path, and now I think the key point is simple, flat 3 is the only playable number here. I make this closer to 3.5, so if the market keeps moving in that direction, it only reinforces the read.

Why the number matters

When a line is already sitting at Bills -3, you are not really asking a small question. You are asking whether Buffalo should be laying a field goal in a matchup that can absolutely decide itself by more than that. My answer is yes.

The spot can help too. If Buffalo takes care of business on Sunday and Detroit does the same against New Orleans, that creates a little early season zig-zag angle that I like. The setup matters in these spots, because it keeps the focus on how the market may be reacting, not just what happened last out.

Detroit did open with a 31-30 win over New Orleans, so this is not some panic play against a team that has already fallen apart. It is more about where the matchup lands, and where the line is heading. This is one of Detroit’s toughest games on the schedule, and I do not want to ignore that.

Buffalo has the cleaner path

The last meeting was a shootout, a 48-42 Bills win, and that game still tells you plenty. Josh Allen beat Detroit with both his arm and legs, and Detroit’s defense had few answers. Buffalo also posted 559 yards of offense in that one, which is not a detail I want to brush aside when these teams meet again.

That is the part that really stands out to me. Detroit can be dangerous in a high-scoring script, sure, but Buffalo has already shown it can push this matchup into its own territory. And at home, the Bills have a great field advantage. That matters more here than people want to admit.

I also do not love the current shape of Detroit’s defense in this spot. CBS Sports reported the Lions are without two starting offensive linemen, right tackle Blake Miller and left guard Christian Mahogany, and that is not the kind of note I want hanging over a road trip into Buffalo. On top of that, D.J. Reed is questionable, which adds another layer of uncertainty in the secondary.

That is where this starts to lean Buffalo for me. If Detroit is already dealing with some moving pieces up front, then asking it to handle Allen in Buffalo becomes a tougher task. And if the secondary is not fully settled, that only opens the door more.

Final read

I do respect Detroit. I also respect the fact that this one opened as a game people were going to attack from every angle. But I am not trying to be cute here. The line is telling us where it wants to go, the matchup favors Buffalo at home, and the earlier meeting showed exactly how dangerous Allen can be against this defense.

The Lions have a very easy schedule overall, but this is one of their toughest games. I like the Bills to win by a TD or more.
